Abstract

A connector (10,10A) is provided for electrically interconnecting the conductors (12) of a flat flexible circuit (14)to the conductors of a complementary mating connecting device. The connector includes a body member (22) on which a first length (14a) of the flexible circuit (14) is fixed. A second length (14b) of the circuit extends away from the body member. A resilient strain relief component (33) on the body member (22) is engageable with the flexible circuit (14) to locate the second length (14b) of the flexible circuit in a plane offset from the plane of the first length (14a) of the circuit. Therefore, pulling forces on the second length (14b) of the flexible circuit away from the body member biases the circuit against the resilient strain relief component (33). The body member may be a two-part housing (46) relatively movable between open and closed positions. A flexible molded-in-place (56) hinge joins the housing parts to accommodate their movement.

Claims

1. A connector for electrically interconnecting conductors of a flat flexible circuit to conductors of a complementary mating connecting device, comprising:

a body member on which a first length of the flexible circuit is fixed, with a second length of the circuit extending away from the body member, wherein said body member has a forward edge about which the flexible circuit is wrapped; and

a resilient strain relief means on the body member engageable with the flexible circuit such as to locate the second length of the flexible circuit in a plane offset from the plane of the first length of the circuit,

whereby pulling forces on the second length of the flexible circuit away from the body member biases the circuit against the resilient strain relief means, and

wherein said body member includes a passage through which the second length of the flexible circuit extends, the passage being offset from the plane of the first length of the flexible circuit, and the resilient strain relief means being located in the passage.

2. The connector of claim 1 wherein said body member is elongated, and said passage comprises a relatively narrow slot extending lengthwise of the body member.

3. The connector of claim 1 wherein said resilient strain relief means comprises a molded-in-place component.

4. The connector of claim 3 wherein said body member is unitarily molded of plastic material and said molded-in-place component is of an elastomeric material.

5. The connector of claim 1 wherein said body member is molded of relatively rigid plastic material.

6. The connector of claim 1 wherein said resilient strain relief means is of an elastomeric material.

7. A connector for electrically interconnecting conductors of a flat flexible circuit to conductors of a complementary mating connecting device, comprising:

an elongated body member on which a first length of the flexible circuit is fixed, with a second length of the circuit extending away from the body member, the body member being unitarily molded of relatively rigid plastic material, wherein said body member has a forward edge about which the flexible circuit is wrapped; and

a resilient strain relief strip molded-in-place on the body member and being of an elastomeric material, the resilient strain relief strip being engageable with the flexible circuit such as to locate the second length of the flexible circuit in a plane offset from the plane of the first length of the circuit,

whereby pulling forces on the second length of the flexible circuit away from the body member biases the circuit against the resilient strain relief strip.

8. The connector of claim 7 wherein said resilient strain relief strip is a silicone rubber structure.

9. The connector of claim 7 wherein said body member includes a relatively narrow slot extending lengthwise thereof, the slot being offset from the plane of the first length of the flexible circuit, and the resilient strain relief strip being located in the slot.

10. A connector for electrically interconnecting conductors of a flat flexible circuit to conductors of a complementary mating connecting device, comprising:

a relatively rigid body member on which the flexible circuit is fixed, with a portion of the circuit extending away from the body member; and

a molded resilient strain relief means on the body member biased against the flexible circuit in response to pulling forces on said portion of the circuit away from the body member,

wherein the body member and strain relief means are fabricated of different materials.

11. The connector of claim 10 wherein said resilient strain relief means comprises a molded-in-place component.

12. The connector of claim 11 wherein said resilient strain relief means is of an elastomeric material.

13. A connector for electrically interconnecting conductors of a flat flexible circuit to conductors of a complementary mating connecting device, comprising:

a multi-part housing for receiving the flat flexible circuit and including at least a pair of rigid housing parts relatively movable between open and closed positions; and

a flexible hinge means molded between the rigid housing parts to accommodate said movement of the housing parts between said positions.

14. The connector of claim 13 wherein said flexible hinge means comprises at least one molded-in-place component.

15. The connector of claim 14 wherein each of said housing parts is unitarily molded of plastic material and said molded-in-place component is of an elastomeric material.

16. The connector of claim 13 wherein said flexible hinge means is of an elastomeric material.

17. The connector of claim 13 wherein each of said housing parts is molded of relatively rigid plastic material.

18. The connector of claim 13 wherein said flexible hinge means comprise a pair of spaced hinge components.

19. The connector of claim 18 wherein each of said housing parts is unitarily molded of plastic material, and said pair of spaced hinge components comprise molded-in-place components of elastomeric material.

20. The connector of claim 19 wherein said hinge components are of silicone rubber material.
