Abstract

A satellite-based communications system operating at high data rates includes a plurality of satellites each having uplink and downlink antennas for transmitting and receiving a plurality of signals utilizing a plurality of spot beams to and from a plurality of coverage areas at a predetermined range of frequencies. The system also includes a plurality of user terminals for transmitting and receiving signals to and from the plurality of communications satellites at the predetermined range of frequencies and at one of the first plurality of data rates. Each of the user terminals having a steerable antenna for tracking relative movement of each of the user terminals with respect to each of the plurality of communications satellites and for tracking movement of each of the plurality of communications satellites in order to maintain communications with the plurality of communications satellites.

Claims

1. A system for providing wideband communications to mobile users in a first satellite-based network, the system comprising:

a plurality of satellites each having uplink and downlink antennas for transmitting and receiving a plurality of signals utilizing a plurality of spot beams to and from a plurality of coverage areas at a predetermined range of frequencies, each of the plurality of satellites transmitting and receiving the plurality of signals at one of a first plurality of data rates, each of the plurality of satellites include a hybrid switch coupled to a bent pipe repeater and a digital packet switch, each of the plurality of satellites comprise a programmable routing table coupled to the hybrid switch, the routing table includes user routing information so as to allow said hybrid switch to route the plurality of signals to said bent pipe repeater or said digital packet switch based on the signal transmitted by the user terminal and the user routing information in the routing table; and

a plurality of user terminals for transmitting and receiving signals to and from the plurality of communications satellites at the predetermined range of frequencies and at one of the first plurality of data rates, and each of the user terminals having a steerable antenna for tracking relative movement of each of the user terminals with respect to each of the plurality of communications satellites and for tracking movement of each of the plurality of communications satellites so as to maintain communications with the plurality of communications satellites.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellites further comprise an intersatellite link for communicating with each of the other plurality of satellites.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the plurality of satellites include GEO satellites in a geostationary earth orbit constellation.

4. The system as recited in claim 3 wherein the uplink and downlink antennas are multibeam antenna arrays.

5. The system as recited in claim 3 wherein the plurality of satellites further includes a plurality of MEO satellites in a medium earth orbit constellation.

6. The system as recited in claim 5 wherein the plurality of MEO satellites include a minimum number of satellites such that coverage areas and elevation angles are maximized and delay times and handovers are minimized.

7. The system as recited in claim 6 wherein the plurality of MEO satellites reside in four orbital planes, with five satellites in each of the orbital planes.

8. The system as recited in claim 5 wherein each of the plurality of MEO satellites have an altitude approximately 10352 km above earth.

9. The system as recited in claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of MEO satellites provide elevation angles greater than 35 degrees.

10. The system as recited in claim 5 wherein each of the plurality of MEO satellites have a repeat able ground track.

11. The system as recited in claim 10 wherein each of the plurality of MEO satellites have four orbits, each orbit being a six-hour orbit that repeats every 24 hours.

12. The system as recited in claim 5 wherein the uplink and downlink antennas are steerable phased array antennas.

13. The system as recited in claim 2 wherein the plurality of satellites further include a plurality of IGSO satellites in an inclined geosynchronous orbit constellation.

14. The system as recited in claim 13 wherein the plurality of IGSO satellites include a minimum number of satellites such that coverage areas are maximized and handovers are minimized.

15. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the plurality of IGSO satellites are positioned in four orbital planes, with three satellites in each of the orbital planes.

16. The system as recited in claim 15 wherein adjacent satellites are 90 degrees apart.

17. The system as recited in claim 13 wherein each of the IGSO satellites provide elevation angles greater than 30 degrees.

18. The system as recited in claim 13 wherein each of the IGSO satellites have an inclination angle of 55 degrees with respect to the equator.

19. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the user routing information is frequency-related.

20. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the user routing information is time-dependent.

21. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein bent-pipe repeater is for transmitting signals destined for a destination beam that is the same as the source beam.

22. The system as recited in claim 21 wherein packet switch is for packet switching signals destined for a destination beam that is different than the source beam.

23. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellites further comprises a controller for controlling transmission of the signals at the one of the first plurality of data rates.

24. The system as recited in claim 23 wherein the controller controls the transmission of the signal at a second one of the first plurality of data rates upon detecting signal attenuation.

25. The system as recited in claim 24 wherein the signal is transmitted at the second one of the first plurality of data rates to at least one user terminal in one of the plurality of coverage areas.

26. The system as recited in claim 23 wherein the controller is further operative to reprogram the programmable routing table.

27. The system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a ground station for transmitting and receiving signals to and from the controller of each of the plurality of communications satellites for monitoring and controlling each of the plurality of satellites.

28. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the predetermined range of frequencies is the 40/50 GHz region of frequencies.

29. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the intersatellite link is an optical link.

30. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the intersatellite link is a radio frequency link.

31. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the user terminal is a mobile device adapted for use with a vehicle.

32. The system as recited in claim 31 wherein the steerable antenna is a conformal antenna.

33. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the user terminal is a portable device adapted to connect to electronic devices through a modem connection.

34. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein each of the coverage areas are approximately 200 km in diameter.

35. The system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a system access node connected to a plurality of terrestrial networks, for transmitting and receiving the signals to and from each of the plurality of satellites so as to connect any one of the plurality of user terminals to one of the plurality of terrestrial networks.

The system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a system access node in communication with a second satellite-based network having a second plurality of satellites, for transmitting and receiving the signals to and from each of the plurality of satellites so as to connect any one of the plurality of user terminals to one of the second plurality of satellites.

The system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a third plurality of satellites each having uplink and downlink antennas for transmitting and receiving a plurality of signals utilizing a plurality of wide area beams to and from a plurality of large coverage areas at a second predetermined range of frequencies, each of the third plurality of satellites transmitting and receiving the plurality of signals at one of a second plurality of data rates, the second plurality of data rates being less then the first plurality of data rates, so as to provide ubiquitous coverage.

The system as recited in claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellites are positioned in an orbit slot and transmit and receive signals to and from a particular coverage area, and wherein the system further comprising at least one additional satellite positioned in the same orbit slot as one of the plurality of satellites.

In a satellite-based communications network including a plurality of communications satellites each having uplink and downlink antennas for transmitting and receiving a plurality of signals utilizing a plurality of spot beams to and from a plurality of coverage areas at a predetermined range of frequencies, and the network further including a plurality of user terminals for transmitting and receiving the plurality of signals to and from the plurality of satellites, and each of the plurality of user terminals having a steerable antenna for tracking relative movement of each of the user terminals with respect to each of the plurality of communications satellites and for tracking movement of each of the plurality of communications satellites, a method for providing wideband communications to mobile users, the method comprising:

transmitting a signal to one of the plurality of satellites at one of the plurality of data rates from one of the plurality of user terminals in a first one of the plurality of coverage areas;

receiving the signal from the one of the plurality of user terminals;

routing the signal through a hybrid switch;

routing the signal to either a bent pipe repeater or a digital packet switch in response to the signal through the hybrid switch to form a processed signal; and

transmitting the processed signal at the one of the plurality of data rises to a second one of the plurality of coverage areas.

40. The method as recited in claim 39 wherein each of the plurality of satellites further includes a routing table having user routing information and wherein processing the received signal includes comparing the received signal from the one of the plurality of user terminals with the user routing information.

41. The method as recited in claim 40 wherein processing the received signal further includes packet-switching the received signal if the first and second one of the plurality of coverage areas are different.

42. The method as recited in claim 41 wherein processing the received signal further includes repeating the received signal if the first and second one of the plurality of coverage areas are the same.

43. The method as recited in claim 42 further comprising monitoring performance of the signal to detect degradation in the signal.

44. The method as recited in claim 43 further comprising transmitting the processed signal at a second one of the plurality of data rates upon detecting a degradation in the signal.
