A control system for a semi-automatic gearbox, including a lever for controlling gear changes, control means for controlling an automatic operating mode for changing gear ratios in the gearbox, wherein the control means include a control button available to the driver on said lever for initiating an automatic operating mode, and for initiating a change over from automatic mode to manual mode, and wherein said system further includes a subassembly having means for analyzing the actuation of the lever representing the requests made by the driver and for imposing an automatic operating mode when it no longer recognizes the requests made by the driver, as expressed by actuating the lever.
