Abstract

There is disclosed an improved skate wheel for an in-line skate comprising a hub for rotation about an axis and a plurality of cores of material disposed about the hub to be coaxial therewith, the outer core of material being harder than the inner core to facilitate a rolling motion of the wheel over a surface while absorbing energy.

Claims

1. A skate wheel for an in-line skate, comprising:

hub means for rotation about an axis;

a plurality of layers of material disposed concentrically about said hub means, each of said plurality of layers consisting of a resiliently deformable material having a predetermined hardness permitting lateral flexure of said layers about a non-radial loading of said layers relative to said axis;

said plurality of layers comprising at least one inner polymeric core disposed concentrically about said hub means and at least one outer polymeric core disposed concentrically about said inner core, said at least one outer core including an outer surface adapted for roller over a surface, which outer surface is acuate along said axis;

wherein the hardness of said at least one outer core exceeds the hardness of said at least one inner core so that said outer core is harder than said inner core for rolling over a surface, and said inner core is softer than said outer core so that said inner and outer cores cooperate to absorb energy during a rolling motion of said wheel when under load over a surface, and to release energy upon reduction of said load for non-radial propulsion of said wheel relative to the ground.

2. The wheel of claim 1 including stiffening means disposed in said inner core to prevent excessive flexure thereof due to torsional loading of said wheel.

3. The wheel of claim 2 wherein said stiffening means comprise spoke members of relatively stiff material in said inner core.

4. The wheel of claim 3 wherein said spoke members extend from said hub means to said outer core.

5. The wheel of claim 2 wherein sald stiffening means comprise a spine member disposed annularly within said inner core.

6. The wheel of claim 1 wherein the durometric hardness of said inner core falls in the range of Shore 40A to 80A.

7. The wheel of claim 6 wherein the durometric hardness of said outer core falls within the range of Shore 72A to 96A.

8. The wheel of claim 4 wherein said spoke members are formed integrally with said outer core.

9. The wheel of claim 7 wherein said material is polyurethane.

10. The wheel of claim 1 wherein said at least one inner core is adapted to absorb energy during a rolling motion of said wheel over a surface.

11. The wheel of claim 1 wherein said inner core facilitates lateral flexing of said wheel in response to oblique loading of said wheel.

12. The wheel of claim 10 wherein said at least one outer core is adapted to transmit energy to and from said inner core for said absorption and release of said energy by the latter.

13. The wheel of claim 9 wherein said at least one inner core is adapted to absorb energy during a rolling motion of said wheel over a surface.

14. The wheel of claim 13 wherein said inner core facilitates lateral flexing of said wheel in response to non-radial loading of said wheel.

15. The wheel of claim 14 wherein said at least one outer core is adapted to transmit energy to and from said inner core for said absorption and release of said energy by the latter.
