Abstract

Low voltage logic circuitry is used to permit an entire subsystem of an industrial controller to be placed within a hazardous environment to receive a high speed serial link and undertake the control of multiple control points without expensive and awkward long cable runs and electrically isolating circuits for each cable run. Energy and bandwidth limiting on the high speed link allows power levels commensurate with high data rates yet intrinsic safety of the media allowing it to freely pass in and out of the hazardous area. A mixture of intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe equipment on the same logical rack is allowed through a bus isolator providing isolated data communication in backplane fashion between modules while wholly isolating power transmission along the backplane.

Claims

1. A network interface connecting components of an industrial controller communicating via electrical data signals comprising:

an electrical conductor for communicating data signals between the components;

a high pass filter positioned between a first component and the electrical conductor to attenuate low frequencies of a data signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition of the conductor;

a power limiting circuit positioned between a first component and the electrical conductor and limiting the power of that signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition.

2. The network interface of claim 1 further including a galvanic isolation circuitry positioned between the first component and the electrical conductor galvanically isolating the data signal from corresponding data signals transmitted on the electrical conductor to the second component.

3. The network interface of claim 1 including an adapter receiving data from the component and converting the data for serial transmission on the electrical conductor.

4. The network interface of claim 1 including an adapter receiving a serial transmission of data on the electrical conductor and decoding the serial data for use by the component.

5. A method of operating an industrial controller in a hazardous environment, the industrial controller comprising an intrinsically safe unit having reduced power levels unlikely to produce a spark sufficient to ignite a flammable atmosphere and a non-intrinsically safe unit not having reduced power levels, the intrinsically safe unit connected to a plurality of control points of an industrial process located in a hazardous environment, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) placing the intrinsically safe unit in the hazardous area;

(b) collecting data of the plurality of control points with the intrinsically safe unit in a serial format for transmission on an electrical conductor to the non-intrinsically safe unit;

(c) limiting the transmission of power of the electrical signals on the electrical conductor to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition of the conductor; and

(d) transmitting isolated electrical signals to the non-intrinsically isolated unit positioned outside the hazardous area.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein step (c) is accomplished by interposing in series on the electrical conductor:

(i) a high pass filter attenuating low frequencies of a data signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition of the conductor;

(ii) a power limiting circuit limiting the power of that signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition; and

(iii) galvanic isolation circuitry galvanically isolating the signals transmitted on the electrical conductor between the intrinsically safe unit and non-intrinsically safe unit.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the power limiting circuit limits instantaneous power.

8. A method of operating an industrial controller in a hazardous environment, the industrial controller comprising an intrinsically safe unit having reduced power levels unlikely to produce a spark sufficient to ignite a flammable atmosphere and a non-intrinsically safe unit not having reduced power levels, the intrinsically safe unit connected to a plurality of control points of an industrial process located in a hazardous environment, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) placing the intrinsically safe unit in the hazardous area;

(b) transmitting isolated electrical signals from the non-intrinsically isolated unit located outside the hazardous area to the intrinsically safe unit via an electrical conductor;

(c) limiting the transmission of power of the electrical signals on the electrical conductor to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition of the conductor; and

(d) receiving the power limited serial transmission at the intrinsically isolated unit and extracting data values therefrom to provide to the plurality of control points.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein step (c) is accomplished by interposing in series on the electrical conductor:

(i) a high pass filter attenuating low frequencies of a data signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition of the conductor;

(ii) a power limiting circuit limiting the power of that signal to avoid the generation of sparks with sufficient energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere during a fault condition; and

(iii) galvanic isolation circuitry galvanically isolating the signals transmitted on the electrical conductor between the intrinsically safe unit and non-intrinsically safe unit.
