1. A modem device comprising:

  • a first connector to allow coupling to a telecommunications transmission system, the first connector to transmit a mode select signal and the first connector to receive a first plurality of signals from the telecommunications transmission system;

    a selector to receive the mode select signal on a mode select line from said first connector and to select an initial operational mode between a plurality of operational modes in response to said mode select signal, the selector to poll the mode select line to check for a change in the mode select signal, the selector to switch to a different operational mode based on the change in the mode select signal;

    a circuit coupled to said selector to receive the first plurality of signals from said telecommunications transmission system in a selected operational mode and to transmit a second plurality of signals to a computer system wherein said circuit also is to receive a third plurality of signals from said computer system and to transmit a fourth plurality of signals on said telecommunications transmission system in said selected operational mode, a first connector to allow coupling to a telecommunications transmission system, said first plurality of signals separate from said mode select signal; and

    a second connector coupled between the circuit and the first connector, the second connector to receive the mode select signal from the first connector and the second connector to deliver the mode select signal to the selector.
