1. A method for performing an operation over a communications network based on a uniform resource locator, wherein a protocol is to be employed by a first computer system in issuing a communication to a second computer system over the communications network, said method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) determining whether the uniform resource locator contains a first value corresponding to an encapsulating protocol;

    (b) determining whether the uniform resource locator contains an operation protocol key indicating that the uniform resource locator contains a second value corresponding to an operation protocol, if a determination is made in said step (a) that the uniform resource locator contains said first value corresponding to said encapsulating protocol; and

    (c) selecting said operation protocol as the protocol to be employed by the first computer system in issuing the communication to the second computer system, if said determination in said step (b) indicates that the uniform resource locator contains said second value corresponding to said operation protocol.
