1. An apparatus for measuring blood parameters in a blood system, comprising:

  • (a) an extracorporeal portion having a first end adapted to be connected to a vascular portion of the blood system at an up stream end and a second end adapted to be connected to the vascular portion at a downstream end, the extracorporeal portion having a light transmissive section;

    (b) an optical sensor coupled to the light transmissive section for detecting a photometric property of diluted blood flowing within the extracorporeal portion; and

    (c) means for determining a selected blood characteristics corresponding to the detected photometric property of the diluted blood.
