1. A functionalized copolymer of the formula
whereA is a block of vinylaromatic monomers of 8 to 20 carbon atoms;
B is a block of alkadiene monomers of 4 to 12 carbon atoms;
Z is a fundamental building block of a compound having sterically hindering groups; and
X is a functionalized fundamental building blockresulting from reaction of a living copolymer A--B--Z.sup.⊖
with a difunctional or polyfunctional compound selected from the group consisting of the 1,2-anhydride or 1,2-anhydride chloride of 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid, chloroethanolyl succinic anhydride, chloroformylsuccinic anhydride and 1 -acetoxyacetyl-3,4-phthalic anhydride, and wherein the degree of functionalization of the copolymer is at least 85%.
