Abstract

The present invention relates to an intake reed valve with a raised, annular valve seat and steel reed for an internal combustion fastener driving tool.

Claims

1. A fastener driving tool operable through an internal combustion driven piston, the tool comprising:

(a) a driver body comprising a cylinder head and a piston housing, a piston housed in the piston housing, a driving member attached to the piston;

a combustion chamber defined by the cylinder head, piston housing and piston;

the piston and driving member being axially arranged and configured within the piston housing to drive a fastener upon combustion of a mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber;

the cylinder head comprising an interior surface, the cylinder head defining an intake port; and

(b) an intake valve comprising a reed valve, the reed valve being located on the interior surface of the cylinder head, the reed valve comprising a reed portion and a raised, nonresilient seat portion, the raised nonresilient seat portion comprising a raised, annular ridge extending from the interior surface of the cylinder head and enclosing the intake port.

2. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured to open in response to a pressure of less than about 3 inches of water.

3. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured with a surface area that provides a substantially leak proof seal at firing pressure in the combustion chamber.

4. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the reed valve comprises a steel valve and an aluminum seat.

5. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the seat consists of coined metal.

6. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, further comprising a spark plug;

the spark plug being arranged and configured to couple to the cylinder head and to retain the intake valve on the intake port.

7. The fastener driving tool of claim 6, wherein the spark plug comprises an electrode and a spark plug body arranged and configured for sealably retaining an O-ring and an intake reed valve between the spark plug body and the cylinder head;

the spark plug body defining an axial bore that houses the electrode and that retains a connector on the electrode.

8. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, further comprising an air intake port defined by the tool, arranged and configured for receiving air from surroundings of the tool, and being in fluid communication with the intake valve;

the intake valve being in fluid communication with the combustion chamber;

the piston housing and piston being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the intake port and intake valve and into the combustion chamber.

9. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, further comprising:

(d) a pump system;

the pump system comprising an intake system, an exhaust system, a pump sleeve, a pump housing, and the piston housing;

the pump sleeve sealably contacting the piston housing and defining a space around the piston housing;

the pump housing being arranged and configured to move axially in the space and to sealably contact the pump sleeve;

a compression spring in the space axially biasing the pump housing;

the intake system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the combustion chamber and surroundings of the tool;

the exhaust system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the space and surroundings of the tool;

(e) the pump system being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the reed valve into the combustion chamber, and so that a piston upstroke expels excess air through a decompression port;

the piston upstroke leaving an amount of air in the combustion chamber sufficient to combust a metered amount of fuel.

10. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the raised, substantially nonresilient seat portion substantially eliminates adherence of the reed portion to the seat portion.

11. The fastener driving tool of claim 1, wherein the seat comprises a metal seat.

12. A fastener driving tool operable through an internal combustion driven piston, the tool comprising:

(a) a driver body comprising a cylinder head and a piston housing, a piston housed in the piston housing, a driving member attached to the piston;

a combustion chamber defined by the cylinder head, piston housing and piston;

the piston and driving member being axially arranged and configured within the piston housing to drive a fastener upon combustion of a mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber;

the cylinder head comprising an interior surface defining a region of the combustion chamber; and

(b) an intake valve comprising a reed valve, the reed valve being located on the interior surface of the cylinder head, the reed valve comprising a reed portion and a raised, annular metal seat portion, wherein the seat consists of coined metal.

13. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, wherein the raised, metal seat portion substantially eliminates adherence of the reed portion to the seat portion.

14. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured to open in response to a pressure of less than about 3 inches of water.

15. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured with a surface area that provides a substantially leak proof seal at firing pressure in the combustion chamber.

16. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, wherein the reed valve comprises a steel valve and an aluminum seat.

17. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, further comprising a spark plug;

the spark plug being arranged and configured to couple to the cylinder head and to retain the intake valve on the intake port.

18. The fastener driving tool of claim 17, wherein the spark plug comprises an electrode and a spark plug body arranged and configured for sealably retaining an O-ring and an intake reed valve between the spark plug body and the cylinder head;

the spark plug body defining an axial bore that houses the electrode and that retains a connector on the electrode.

19. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, further comprising an air intake port defined by the tool, arranged and configured for receiving air from surroundings of the tool, and being in fluid communication with the intake valve;

the intake valve being in fluid communication with the combustion chamber;

the piston housing and piston being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the intake port and intake valve and into the combustion chamber.

20. The fastener driving tool of claim 12, further comprising:

(d) a pump system;

the pump system comprising an intake system, an exhaust system, a pump sleeve, a pump housing, and the piston housing;

the pump sleeve sealably contacting the piston housing and defining a space around the piston housing;

the pump housing being arranged and configured to move axially in the space and to sealably contact the pump sleeve;

a compression spring in the space axially biasing the pump housing;

the intake system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the combustion chamber and surroundings of the tool;

the exhaust system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the space and surroundings of the tool;

(e) the pump system being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the reed valve into the combustion chamber, and so that a piston upstroke expels excess air through a decompression port;

the piston upstroke leaving an amount of air in the combustion chamber sufficient to combust a metered amount of fuel.

21. A fastener driving tool operable through an internal combustion driven piston, the tool comprising:

(a) a driver body comprising a cylinder head and a piston housing, a piston housed in the piston housing, a driving member attached to the piston;

a combustion chamber defined by the cylinder head, piston housing and piston;

the piston and driving member being axially arranged and configured within the piston housing to drive a fastener upon combustion of a mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber;

the cylinder head comprising an interior surface, the cylinder head defining an intake port;

(b) an intake valve comprising a reed valve, the reed valve being located on the interior surface of the cylinder head, the reed valve comprising a reed portion and a raised nonresilient seat portion; and

(c) a spark plug, wherein the spark plug couples to the cylinder head and retains the intake valve on the intake port.

22. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured to open in response to a pressure of less than about 3 inches of water.

23. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured with a surface area that provides a substantially leak proof seal at firing pressure in the combustion chamber.

24. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the reed valve comprises a raised, metal seat.

25. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the reed valve comprises a steel valve and an aluminum seat.

26. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the seat consists of coined metal.

27. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the seat comprises a metal seat.

28. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, wherein the spark plug comprises an electrode and a spark plug body arranged and configured for sealably retaining an O-ring and an intake reed valve between the spark plug body and the cylinder head;

the spark plug body defining an axial bore that houses the electrode and that retains a connector on the electrode.

29. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, further comprising an air intake port defined by the tool, arranged and configured for receiving air from surroundings of the tool, and being in fluid communication with the intake valve;

the intake valve being in fluid communication with the combustion chamber;

the piston housing and piston being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the intake port and intake valve and into the combustion chamber.

30. The fastener driving tool of claim 21, further comprising:

(d) a pump system;

the pump system comprising an intake system, an exhaust system, a pump sleeve, a pump housing, and the piston housing;

the pump sleeve sealably contacting the piston housing and defining a space around the piston housing;

the pump housing being arranged and configured to move axially in the space and to sealably contact the pump sleeve;

a compression spring in the space axially biasing the pump housing;

the intake system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the combustion chamber and surroundings of the tool;

the exhaust system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the space and surroundings of the tool;

(e) the pump system being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the reed valve into the combustion chamber, and so that a piston upstroke expels excess air through a decompression port;

the piston upstroke leaving an amount of air in the combustion chamber sufficient to combust a metered amount of fuel.

31. A fastener driving tool operable through an internal combustion driven piston, the tool comprising:

(a) a driver body comprising a cylinder head and a piston housing, a piston housed in the piston housing, a driving member attached to the piston;

a combustion chamber defined by the cylinder head, piston housing and piston;

the piston and driving member being axially arranged and configured within the piston housing to drive a fastener upon combustion of a mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber;

the cylinder head comprising an interior surface defining a region of the combustion chamber; and

(b) an intake valve comprising a reed valve, the reed valve being located or the interior surface of the cylinder head, the reed valve comprising a steel reed portion and a raised, annular aluminum seat portion.

32. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured to open in response to a pressure of less than about 3 inches of water.

33. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, wherein the reed valve is arranged and configured with a surface area that provides a substantially leak proof seal at firing pressure in the combustion chamber.

34. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, wherein the seat consists of coined metal.

35. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, further comprising a spark plug;

the spark plug being arranged and configured to couple to the cylinder head and to retain the intake valve on the intake port.

36. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, wherein the spark plug comprises an electrode and a spark plug body arranged and configured for sealably retaining an O-ring and an intake reed valve between the spark plug body and the cylinder head;

the spark plug body defining an axial bore that houses the electrode and that retains a connector on the electrode.

37. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, further comprising an air intake port defined by the tool, arranged and configured for receiving air from surroundings of the tool, and being in fluid communication with the intake valve;

the intake valve being in fluid communication with the combustion chamber;

the piston housing and piston being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the intake port and intake valve and into the combustion chamber.

38. The fastener driving tool of claim 31, further comprising:

(d) a pump system;

the pump system comprising an intake system, an exhaust system, a pump sleeve, a pump housing, and the piston housing;

the pump sleeve sealably contacting the piston housing and defining a space around the piston housing;

the pump housing being arranged and configured to move axially in the space and to sealably contact the pump sleeve;

a compression spring in the space axially biasing the pump housing;

the intake system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the combustion chamber and surroundings of the tool;

the exhaust system being arranged and configured for fluid communication with the space and surroundings of the tool; and

(e) the pump system being arranged and configured so that a downstroke of the piston pulls air through the reed valve into the combustion chamber, and so that a piston upstroke expels excess air through a decompression port;

the piston upstroke leaving an amount of air in the combustion chamber sufficient to combust a metered amount of fuel.
