Abstract

An apparatus and method for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly in which the apparatus has a shape defined by a preset shape of a resilient fiber core. The resilient fiber core is covered by a soft polymer tubing or other polymer material to form a delivery apparatus that takes the shape of the resilient fiber core. Various shapes and structures are disclosed that infuse diagnostic and therapeutic agents through a lumen of the polymer tubing, that deliver the agents in the form of a soluble coating, and that circulate or contain a preloaded charge of radioactive material for intravascular radiotherapy. The resilient fiber core and soft polymer material permit the construction of a very small apparatus that can be removed easily following treatment. Various deployment systems are disclosed for deploying the delivery apparatuses into a vessel and for protecting against radiation exposure.

Claims

1. A coil apparatus for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly, comprising:

a resilient fiber core having a linear portion and a coiled portion; and

a polymer tubing encasing the resilient fiber core and adapting to the shape of the resilient fiber core, said polymer tubing comprising a first portion encasing the linear portion of the resilient fiber core and a second portion encasing the coiled portion of the resilient fiber core.

The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing is constructed from a braided, stitched, or other porous material, and said first portion of the polymer tubing is consolidated, coated, or impregnated so as to be non-porous, while said second portion of the polymer tubing remains porous for releasing fluid-based agents from said coil apparatus.

3. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said coiled portion of the resilient fiber core is spiral-shaped in plan view.

4. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said coiled portion of the resilient fiber core has a helical shape tapering from a relatively large end to a relatively small end.

5. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing comprises at least two lumens extending along a length of said polymer tubing said resilient fiber core extending through one of said lumens.

The coil apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising an inner sheath secured to an inner diameter of said second portion of said polymer tubing, said inner sheath having a passage extending therethrough to permit fluids to continue flowing through a vessel in which the coil apparatus is deployed.

7. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of said polymer tubing is covered by a soluble coating containing a therapeutic agent.

The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a first portion of said polymer tubing has an outer surface covered by a soluble coating containing a therapeutic agent and a second portion of said polymer tubing has a releasing means for releasing fluid-based agents from a lumen of the polymer tubing.

9. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing is provided with a return passage for circulating a suspension of radioactive material through a lumen thereof.

The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing is provided with a double lumen construction with first and second lumens having distal ends connected together, said first lumen providing a supply passage to the coiled portion and said second lumen providing a return passage from the coiled portion for circulating a suspension of radioactive material through said coil apparatus to provide intravascular radiotherapy.

11. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing has a single lumen that supplies a fluid to a first end of the coiled portion and returns a fluid from a second end of the coiled portion.

12. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a radioactive material loaded into a lumen of said polymer tubing.

13. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polymer tubing comprises at least two lumens, said resilient fiber core extending through one of said lumens and a radioactive material being loaded into another one of said lumens.

14. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a vent tube extending through a lumen of said polymer tubing for passing gas or fluid therethrough.

15. The coil apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a guide tube attached to said first portion of the polymer tubing tor guiding said coil apparatus along a guide wire placed within a vessel.

The coil apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising an inner support tube attached to a first end of said coil and an outer support tube attached to a second end of said coil, said inner and outer support tubes being concentric and movable relative to each other to change at least one of a length and diameter of the coiled portion.

17. A method for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly, comprising the steps of:

providing a coil apparatus having a resilient fiber core with a preset coiled portion, and a soft polymer tubing encasing the resilient fiber core and adapting to the shape of the resilient fiber core;

placing said coil apparatus into a vessel; and

causing a diameter of said coil apparatus to enlarge within the vessel.

18. The method according to claim 17, further comprising the steps of:

loading said coil apparatus into a delivery sheath having an internal diameter smaller than a preset diameter of the coiled portion of said resilient fiber core;

inserting said delivery sheath and said coil apparatus into a vessel; and

moving said coil apparatus out of said delivery sheath whereby said resilient fiber core causes said coil apparatus to increase in diameter and lodge within the vessel.

19. The method according to claim 17, further comprising the step of introducing a pressure into a lumen of the polymer tubing sufficient to cause a coiled portion of the coil-shaped apparatus to partially unwind and increase in diameter within the vessel.

20. The method according to claim 19. wherein said step of introducing a pressure comprises introducing a therapeutic agent into the lumen of the polymer tubing under pressure.

21. The method according to claim 17, wherein the coil-shaped apparatus has a guide tube fixed to a linear portion of the coil apparatus, and further comprising the step of causing the coiled portion of the apparatus to partially unwind and increase in diameter around the guide tube.

The method according to claim 17, further comprising the step of preparing the soft polymer tubing from a braided, stitched, or other porous material by consolidating, coatings or impregnating a first portion of the polymer tubing so as to make said first portion non-porous, while a second portion of the polymer tubing remains porous for releasing fluid-based agents from the coil apparatus.

The method according to claim 17, wherein the step of providing a coil apparatus comprises providing a coil-shaped apparatus having a coiled portion having first and second ends, said first end being connected to an inner support tube and said second end being connected to an outer support tube, said inner and outer support tubes being concentric and movable relative to each other in a telescoping manner;

and

further comprising the step of moving said inner and outer support tubes relative to each other to change at least one of a length and diameter of the coiled portion of the coil-shaped apparatus within the vessel.

24. An apparatus for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly, comprising:

a resilient fiber core having a preset shape; and

a polymer material covering the resilient fiber core and having a shape defined by the preset shape of the resilient fiber core said polymer material defining a space for containing an agent to be delivered intravascularly.

The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said preset shape of said resilient fiber core is such that said resilient fiber core defines a general outline of a cylindrical shape with an open central passage to permit fluids to continue flowing through a vessel in which the apparatus is deployed.

26. The apparatus according to claim 24, further comprising a radioactive material contained within said space defined by said polymer material.

27. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said preset shape of the resilient fiber core includes first and second circular segments connected by a linear segment, and said polymer material covers the circular and linear segments to define a cylindrical-shaped flap.

28. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said preset shape of the resilient fiber core includes a plurality of circular segments connected by a plurality of linear segments, and said polymer material covers the circular segments and the linear segments to define a plurality of cylindrical-shaped flaps.

29. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said preset shape of the resilient fiber core includes a plurality of circular segments, and said polymer material comprises a plurality of polymer tubing segments covering said circular segments to define a plurality of ring portions.

The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said preset shape of the resilient fiber core includes a linear portion and a folded end portion, and said folded end portion comprises a plurality of folded segments extending generally parallel to the linear portion said folded segments being formed into a general outline of a cylindrical shape and being covered by a polymer tubing.

31. In combination, a delivery apparatus for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly and an deployment apparatus for deploying the delivery apparatus, the delivery apparatus comprising:

a resilient fiber core having a preset shape; and

a polymer material covering the resilient fiber core and having a shape defined by the preset shape of the resilient fiber core, said polymer material defining a space for containing an agent to be delivered intravascularly.

The combination of claim 31, wherein the delivery apparatus contains a radioactive material and the deployment apparatus comprises a deployment sheath formed of a material that blocks radiation emitted from said radioactive material when the delivery apparatus is placed within the deployment sheath.

33. The combination of claim 32, wherein the deployment apparatus further comprises a protective container through which said deployment sheath passes, said protective container being formed of a material that blocks radiation emitted from said radioactive material when the delivery apparatus is located within said protective container.
