Abstract

A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having an improved pivot screw design is disclosed. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument has a first half which has a first pivot surface and a first bore. The first bore has a first stepped portion and an elongated portion proximate to the first pivot surface. A second half has a second pivot surface and a second bore having a second stepped portion. An insulating material is disposed on the first pivot surface and the elongated portion of the first bore. A first insert having a third bore in which the third bore has first threads is disposed in the second bore and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion. A second insert having a fourth bore is disposed in the second bore between the second stepped portion and the first insert and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion. Lastly, a pivot screw having a head and a second thread is disposed in the first, second, and third bores such that the head is prevented from entering the second bore by the first stepped portion and where the second thread passes through the first, second, and fourth bores, into the third bore engaging with the first thread whereby the first half is fastened to the second half for sliding contact between the first and second pivot surfaces.

Claims

1. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having an improved pivot screw design, the bipolar electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a first half comprising a first electrode of a first polarity, the first half having a first pivot surface and a first bore, the first bore having a first stepped portion;

a second half comprising a second electrode of a second polarity, the second half having a second pivot surface in sliding contact with the first pivot surface and a second bore having a second stepped portion, the second bore being aligned with the first bore;

an insulating material disposed on one of the first and second pivot surfaces for electrically isolating the first half from the second half;

an insert having a cross-sectional profile, a first insulating coating, and a third bore, the third bore further having first threads, the insert being disposed in the second bore and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion; and

a pivot screw having a head and a second thread, the pivot screw being disposed in the first and second bores such that the head is prevented from entering the second bore by the first stepped portion and where the second thread passes through the first and second bores into the third bore engaging with the first thread whereby the first half is fastened to the second half for sliding contact therewith along the first and second pivot surfaces.

2. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, further comprising first and second scissor portions disposed on the first and second halves respectively, the scissor portions being in cooperation with each other to provide cutting and cauterization of tissue.

3. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the insulating material is aluminum oxide.

4. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the screw is fabricated from a thermoplastic material.

5. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 4, wherein the thermoplastic is polyetheretherketone.

6. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, further comprising a second insulating coating disposed on the pivot screw to provide further isolation between the first and second instrument halves.

7. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 6, wherein the second insulating coating is an anodized coating.

8. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 7, wherein the second insulating coating is aluminum oxide.

9. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is round and the instrument further comprises fastening means for fastening the insert into the second bore and to prevent rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

10. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 9, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

11. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 10, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

12. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 11, wherein the first insulating coating is an anodized coating.

13. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 12, wherein the anodized coating is a hard anodized coating without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first insulating coating.

14. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is other than round for preventing rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

15. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 14, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is elliptical.

16. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 14, further comprising a fastening means for fastening the insert into the second bore.

17. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 16, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

18. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 17, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

19. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 18, wherein first insulating coating is an anodized coating.

20. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 19, wherein the anodized coating is a hard anodized coating without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first insulating coating.

21. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having an improved pivot screw design, the bipolar electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a first half comprising a first electrode of a first polarity, the first half having a first pivot surface and a first bore, the first bore having a first stepped portion;

a second half comprising a second electrode of a second polarity, the second half having a second pivot surface in sliding contact with the first pivot surface and a second bore having a second stepped portion, the second bore being aligned with the first bore;

an insulating material disposed on one of the first and second pivot surfaces for electrically isolating the first half from the second half;

a first insert having a first cross-sectional profile, a first insulating coating, and a third bore, the third bore further having first threads, the first insert being disposed in the second bore and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion;

a second insert having a second cross-sectional profile, a second insulating coating, and a fourth bore, the second insert being disposed in the second bore between the second stepped portion and the first insert and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion; and

a pivot screw having a head and a second thread, the pivot screw being disposed in the first, second, and third bores such that the head is prevented from entering the second bore by the first stepped portion and where the second thread passes through the first, second, and fourth bores, into the third bore engaging with the first thread whereby the first half is fastened to the second half for sliding contact therewith along the first and second pivot surfaces.

22. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, further comprising first and second scissor portions disposed on the first and second halves respectively, the scissor portions being in cooperation with each other to provide cutting and cauterization of tissue.

23. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, wherein the insulating material is aluminum oxide.

24. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, wherein the screw is fabricated from a thermoplastic material.

25. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 24, wherein the thermoplastic is polyetheretherketone.

26. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, further comprising a third insulating coating disposed on the pivot screw to provide further isolation between the first and second instrument halves.

27. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 26, wherein the third insulating coating is an anodized coating.

28. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 27, wherein the third insulating coating is aluminum oxide.

29. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, wherein the cross-sectional profile of at least one of the first and second inserts is round and the instrument further comprises fastening means for fastening the inserts into the second bore and to prevent rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

30. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 29, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

31. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 30, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

32. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 31, wherein the first and second insulating coatings are anodized coatings.

33. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 32, wherein the anodized coatings are hard anodized coatings without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first and second insulating coatings.

34. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 21, wherein the cross-sectional profile of at least one of the first and second inserts is other than round for preventing rotation of the inserts upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

35. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 34, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is elliptical.

36. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 34, further comprising a fastening means for fastening the inserts into the second bore.

37. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 36, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the inserts.

38. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 37, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

39. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 38, wherein the first and second insulating coatings are anodized coatings.

40. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 39, wherein the anodized coatings are hard anodized coatings without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first and second insulating coatings.

41. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having an improved pivot screw design, the bipolar electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a first half comprising a first electrode of a first polarity, the first half having a first pivot surface and a first bore, the first bore having a first stepped portion, an elongated portion proximate to the first pivot surface;

a second half comprising a second electrode of a second polarity, the second half having a second pivot surface in sliding contact with the first pivot surface and a second bore having a second stepped portion, the second bore being aligned with the first bore;

an insulating material disposed on the first pivot surface and the elongated portion of the first bore for electrically isolating the first half from the second half and for increasing the length of the possible conductive path between the first and second halves;

an insert having a cross-sectional profile, a first insulating coating, and a third bore, the third bore further having first threads, the insert being disposed in the second bore and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion; and

a pivot screw having a head and a second thread, the pivot screw being disposed in the first and second bores such that the head is prevented from entering the second bore by the first stepped portion and where the second thread passes through the first and second bores into the third bore engaging with the first thread whereby the first half is fastened to the second half for sliding contact therewith along the first and second pivot surfaces.

42. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the elongated portion of the first bore is a chamfer.

43. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the elongated portion of the first bore is a radius.

44. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, further comprising first and second scissor portions disposed on the first and second halves respectively, the scissor portions being in cooperation with each other to provide cutting and cauterization of tissue.

45. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the insulating material is aluminum oxide.

46. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the screw is fabricated from a thermoplastic material.

47. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 46, wherein the thermoplastic is polyetheretherketone.

48. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, further comprising a second insulating coating disposed on the pivot screw to provide further isolation between the first and second instrument halves.

49. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 48, wherein the second insulating coating is an anodized coating.

50. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 49, wherein the second insulating coating is aluminum oxide.

51. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is round and the instrument further comprises fastening means for fastening the insert into the second bore and to prevent rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

52. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 51, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

53. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 52, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

54. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 53, wherein the first insulating coating is an anodized coating.

55. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 54, wherein the anodized coating is a hard anodized coating without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first insulating coating.

56. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 41, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is other than round for preventing rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

57. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 56, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is elliptical.

58. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 56, further comprising a fastening means for fastening the insert into the second bore.

59. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 58, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

60. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 59, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

61. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 60, wherein the first insulating coating is an anodized coating.

62. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 61, wherein the anodized coating is a hard anodized coatings without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first insulating coating.

63. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having an improved pivot screw design, the bipolar electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a first half comprising a first electrode of a first polarity, the first half having a first pivot surface and a first bore, the first bore having a first stepped portion, an elongated portion proximate to the first pivot surface;

a second half comprising a second electrode of a second polarity, the second half having a second pivot surface in sliding contact with the first pivot surface and a second bore having a second stepped portion, the second bore being aligned with the first bore;

an insulating material disposed on the first pivot surface and the elongated portion of the first bore for electrically isolating the first half from the second half and for increasing the length of the possible conductive path between the first and second halves;

a first insert having a first cross-sectional profile, a first insulating coating, and a third bore, the third bore further having first threads, the first insert being disposed in the second bore and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion;

a second insert having a second cross-sectional profile, a second insulating coating, and a fourth bore, the second insert being disposed in the second bore between the second stepped portion and the first insert and prevented from entering the first bore by the second stepped portion; and

a pivot screw having a head and a second thread, the pivot screw being disposed in the first, second, and third bores such that the head is prevented from entering the second bore by the first stepped portion and where the second thread passes through the first, second, and fourth bores, into the third bore engaging with the first thread whereby the first half is fastened to the second half for sliding contact therewith along the first and second pivot surfaces.

64. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the elongated portion of the first bore is a chamfer.

65. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the elongated portion of the first bore is a radius.

66. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, further comprising first and second scissor portions disposed on the first and second halves respectively, the scissor portions being in cooperation with each other to provide cutting and cauterization of tissue.

67. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the insulating material is aluminum oxide.

68. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the screw is fabricated from a thermoplastic material.

69. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 68, wherein the thermoplastic is polyetheretherketone.

70. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, further comprising a third insulating coating disposed on the pivot screw to provide further isolation between the first and second instrument halves.

71. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 70, wherein the third insulating coating is an anodized coating.

72. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 71, wherein the third insulating coating is aluminum oxide.

73. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the cross-sectional profile of at least one of the first and second inserts is round and the instrument further comprises a fastening means for fastening the inserts into the second bore and to prevent rotation of the insert upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

74. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 73, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the insert.

75. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 74, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

76. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 75, wherein the first and second insulating coatings are anodized coatings.

77. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 76, wherein the anodized coatings are hard anodized coatings without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first and second insulating coatings.

78. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 63, wherein the cross-sectional profile of at least one of the first and second inserts is other than round for preventing rotation of the inserts upon engagement of the first thread with the second thread.

79. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 78, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the insert is elliptical.

80. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 78, further comprising a fastening means for fastening the inserts into the second bore.

81. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 80, wherein the fastening means is epoxy disposed between the second bore and the inserts.

82. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 81, wherein the epoxy is an electrical insulator.

83. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 82, wherein the first and second insulating coatings are anodized coatings.

84. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument of claim 83, wherein the anodized coatings are hard anodized coatings without any polymer impregnation for providing increased adhesion of the epoxy in the pores of the first and second insulating coatings.
