Abstract

A mini-blind actuator has a motor and a housing that holds the motor and a dc battery. The rotor of the motor is coupled to the baton of the mini-blind for rotating the baton and thereby opening or closing the slats of the mini-blind. Alternatively, the rotor is coupled to the tilt rod of the blind to rotate the tilt rod and thereby open or close the slats of the mini-blind. A control signal generator generates a control signal for completing the electrical circuit between the battery and the motor. The control signal can be generated in response to a predetermined amount of daylight or in response to a user-generated remote command signal. The actuator can be used to rotate the slats of horizontal or vertical blinds, or the sections of a pleated shade. Or, the actuator can be used to rotate the hollow rotatable tube of a roll-up shade.

Claims

1. An actuator for rotating a hollow tube of a window covering configured as a roll-up shade, comprising:

a collar configured for engaging the tube;

a collar coupling keyed to the collar;

a gear meshed with the collar coupling;

a reversible electric motor operably engaged with the collar coupling to move the collar coupling; and

a dc battery electrically connected to the motor.

2. The actuator of claim 1, wherein the gear is a pinion gear, and the collar coupling defines an inwardly-oriented endless gear meshed with the pinion gear.

3. The actuator of claim 1, wherein the collar defines an outer periphery configured for keyed engagement with an interior surface of the tube.

4. The actuator of claim 1, further comprising a support for holding the motor, the support being configured for keyed engagement with a wall of the roll up shade.

5. The actuator of claim 2, further comprising:

a sensor for detecting a light signal and generating a control signal in response thereto;

at least one reduction gear coupling the pinion gear with the motor, such that movement of the reduction gear causes rotation of the pinion gear;

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the light sensor and the battery for processing the control signal from the light sensor to cause the battery to energize the motor to rotate the reduction gear and thereby move the roll-up shade.

6. The actuator of claim 5, wherein the actuator is disposed in a tube of the roll-up shade.

7. The actuator of claim 6, further comprising:

a mode switch electrically connected to the electronic circuit, the mode switch having an "off" position, wherein the sensor is not enabled, an "open" position, wherein the motor is energized to open the window covering in response to the control signal, and a "shut" position, wherein the motor is energized to close the window covering in response to the control signal.

8. The actuator of claim 6, further comprising:

a limit switch electrically connected to the electronic circuit;

at least one rotatable travel limit reduction gear gearedly coupled to the reduction gear;

an elongated motion translating element coupled to the travel limit reduction gear;

a first manually adjustable travel limiter threadably engaged with the motion translating element for contacting the limit switch when the window covering is in the open position to cause the electronic circuit to deenergize the motor; and

a second manually adjustable travel limiter threadably engaged with the motion translating element for contacting the limit switch when the shaft is in the position to cause the electronic circuit to deenergize the motor.

9. The actuator of claim 6, wherein the electronic circuit comprises:

a pulse modulation circuit for processing the control signal, wherein the pulse modulation circuit causes the motor to be energized only when the control signal is defined by a predetermined pulse rate.

10. The actuator of claim 6, further comprising a manipulable switch mounted on the window covering for generating the control signal.

11. The actuator of claim 1, further comprising:

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the battery to cause the battery to energize the motor to rotate the collar coupling and thereby move the roll-up shade, the circuit having a pulse mode for energizing the motor in pulses and a continuous mode for continuously energizing the motor.

12. A window covering with actuator, comprising:

a roll up shade including a head rail, a tube rotatably disposed therein, and a shade-type window covering engaged with the tube for moving the window covering between a raised configuration and a lowered configuration when the tube is rotated;

an electric motor in the head rail;

a collar coupling operably engaged with the motor to engage the motor with the tube for rotating the tube;

at least one primary dc battery connected to the motor in the head rail;

a control signal generator for generating a control signal; and

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the control signal generator and the battery for processing the control signal to cause the battery to energize the motor to move the tube, the electronic circuit having at least one of;

a pulse mode for energizing the motor in pulses, and a continuous mode for continuously energizing the motor.

13. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, further comprising:

a manually manipulable operating switch electrically connected to the electronic circuit for manipulation of the operating switch to generate the control signal.

14. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, further comprising:

a mode switch electrically connected to the electronic circuit, the mode switch having an "off" position, wherein the sensor is not enabled, an "open" position, wherein the motor is energized to open the window covering in response to the control signal, and a "shut" position, wherein the motor is energized to close the window covering in response to the control signal.

15. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, further comprising:

a manually manipulable adjuster defining a periphery extending beyond the head rail, so that a person can turn the adjuster, the adjuster including a metal strip; and

a metal tongue mounted on the tube such that the tongue contacts the metal strip to establish electrical contact therebetween to cause the electronic circuit to deenergize the motor when the tube is characterized by a predetermined angular position.

16. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, wherein the at least one battery is disposed in the head rail, and the electronic circuit comprises:

an output amplifier for powering the motor; and

a pulse modulation circuit for processing the control signal, wherein the pulse modulation circuit causes the motor to be energized only when the control signal is defined by a predetermined electronic characteristic.

17. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, wherein the electronic circuit receives a first control signal to energize the motor to turn in a first direction, a second control signal to stop the motor, and a third control signal to cause the motor to turn in a second direction.

18. The window covering with actuator of claim 17, wherein the output amplifier includes a plurality of power transistors, and the electronic circuit includes power conservation resistors to maintain the transistors off in the absence of a control signal.

19. The window covering with actuator of claim 12, further comprising:

a collar configured for engaging the tube;

a collar coupling keyed to the collar; and

a gear meshed with the collar coupling, the dc motor being operably engaged with the collar coupling to move the collar coupling.

20. The window covering with actuator of claim 19, wherein the gear is a pinion gear, and the collar coupling defines an inwardly-oriented endless gear meshed with the pinion gear.

21. The window covering with actuator of claim 20, wherein the collar defines an outer periphery configured for keyed engagement with an interior surface of the tube.

22. The window covering with actuator of claim 21, further comprising a support for holding the motor, the support being configured for keyed engagement with a wall of the head rail.

23. A window covering with actuator, comprising:

a shade including a head rail, a tube rotatably disposed therein, and a window covering engaged with the tube for moving the window covering between a raised configuration and a lowered configuration when the tube is rotated;

an electric motor;

a coupling operably engaged with the motor to engage the motor with the tube for rotating the tube;

at least one dc battery, the at least one battery being the sole source of energy associated with the window covering;

a control signal generator for generating a control signal; and

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the control signal generator and the battery for processing the control signal to cause the at least one battery to energize the motor to move the tube, the electronic circuit having at least one of;

a pulse mode for energizing the motor in pulses, and a continuous mode for continuously energizing the motor.

24. The window covering with actuator of claim 23, further comprising:

a collar configured for engaging the tube;

a collar coupling keyed to the collar; and

a gear meshed with the collar coupling, the dc motor being operably engaged with the collar coupling to move the collar coupling.

25. The window covering with actuator of claim 23, wherein the collar defines an outer periphery configured for keyed engagement with an interior surface of the tube.

26. The window covering with actuator of claim 23, further comprising a support for holding the motor, the support being configured for keyed engagement with a wall of the head rail.

27. A powered shade assembly, comprising:

a shade including a head rail, a tube rotatably disposed therein, and a shade-type window covering engaged with the tube for moving the window covering between a raised configuration and a lowered configuration when the tube is rotated;

an electric motor disposed in the head rail;

a collar coupling operably engaged with the motor to engage the motor with the tube for rotating the tube;

at least one dc battery, the at least one battery being the sole source of energy associated with the window covering, the at least one battery being disposable in the head rail;

a control signal generator for generating a control signal; and

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the control signal generator and the battery, the electronic circuit having an energized state for processing the control signal to cause the at least one battery to energize the motor to move the tube, the electronic circuit also having an idle state in which the at least one battery is not caused to energize the motor.

28. The powered shade assembly of claim 27, wherein the control signal generator consumes less than 10^-5 amperes when the electronic circuit is in the idle state.

29. The powered shade assembly of claim 27, wherein the at least one battery is at least one type AA alkaline battery.

30. The powered shade assembly of claim 27, further comprising:

a collar configured for engaging the tube;

a collar coupling keyed to the collar; and

a gear meshed with the collar coupling, the dc motor being operably engaged with the collar coupling to move the collar coupling.

31. The powered shade assembly of claim 30, wherein the gear is a pinion gear, and the collar coupling defines an inwardly-oriented endless gear meshed with the pinion gear.

32. The powered shade assembly of claim 30, wherein the collar defines an outer periphery configured for keyed engagement with an interior surface of the tube.

33. The powered shade assembly of claim 30, further comprising a support for holding the motor, the support being configured for keyed engagement with a wall of the head rail.

34. A powered shade assembly, comprising:

a shade including a head rail, a rod rotatably disposed therein, and a window covering engaged with the rod for moving the window covering between a raised configuration and a lowered configuration when the rod is rotated;

an electric motor disposed in the head rail;

a coupling operably engaged with the motor to engage the motor with the rod for rotating the rod;

at least one primary dc battery, the at least one battery being the sole source of energy associated with the window covering, the at least one battery being sufficiently small so as to be disposable in the head rail;

a control signal generator for generating a control signal; and

an electronic circuit electrically connected to the control signal generator and the battery, the electronic circuit having an energized state for processing the control signal to cause the at least one battery to energize the motor to move the rod.

35. The powered shade assembly of claim 34, wherein the at least one battery is at least one type AA alkaline battery or at least one lithium battery.

36. The powered shade assembly of claim 34, wherein the window covering is a cellular shade.
