1. A method of providing a Message Waiting Indication from a voice mail system to a mobile telecommunications device, comprising:
- storing the Message Waiting Indication in a database;
informing the database that the mobile telecommunications device is entering a packet mode for communication via a packet channel;
responsive to said informing step, sending the Message Waiting Indication from the database to a mobile services switching center associated with the packet channel; and
sending the Message Waiting Indication from the mobile services switching center to the mobile telecommunications device via the packet channel.

An apparatus in a wireless telecommunications network is provided with Short Message Service via a circuit switched channel unless the apparatus is operating in a packet mode. If the apparatus is operating in the packet mode, the apparatus is provided with Short Message Service via a packet channel.
