Abstract

The present invention provides a method for forming wellbores. In one method, one or more wellbores are drilled along preplanned paths based in part upon seismic surveys performed from the surface. An acoustic transmitter conveyed in such wellbores transmits acoustic signals at a one or more frequencies within a range of frequencies at a plurality of spaced locations. A plurality of substantially serially spaced receivers in the wellbores and/or at surface receive signals reflected by the subsurface formations. The sensors may be permanently installed in the boreholes and could be fiber optic devices. The receiver signals are processed by conventional geophysical processing methods to obtain information about the subsurface formations. This information is utilized to update any prior seismographs to obtain higher resolution seismographs. The improved seismographs are then used to determine the profiles of the production wellbores to be drilled. Borehole seismic imaging may then be used to further improve the seismographs and to plan future wellbores. Cross-well tomography may be utilized to further update the seismographs to manage the reservoirs. The permanently installed sensors may also be used to monitor the progress of fracturing in nearby wells and thereby provide the necessary information for controlling fracturing operations.

Claims

1. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath, a portion of said survey wellbore in proximity to and substantially parallel to a producing reservoir and distant from the surface of the earth;

(b) placing a first plurality of spaced seismic receivers in the survey wellbore;

(c) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations;

(d) detecting by the plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by earth'"'"'s formations in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about the subsurface formations.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations.

The method of claim 2, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising forming a production wellbore in the earth formation utilizing the obtained geophysical information.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the seismic pulses are generated by a source placed at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

(i) placing a second plurality of spaced seismic receivers outside the survey wellbore;

(ii) detecting seismic waves reflected by earth'"'"'s formations in response to the induced seismic pulses by the receivers in the second plurality of receivers and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(iii) combining the signals from the first and second pluralities of receivers to obtain the geophysical information.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising forming at least one wellbore in the hydrocarbon-bearing formation whose wellpath is at least partially determined from the obtained geophysical information.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

(i) subsequently conducting seismic surveys to obtain secondary information about the subsurface formation, and

(ii) combining the obtained geophysical information and the secondary geophysical information to obtain an enhanced map of the subsurface formations.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising producing a cross-well seismograph from the detected seismic waves.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the seismic receivers are chosen from the set consisting of:

geophone, accelerometer, hydrophone and fiber optic sensor.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of spaced apart seismic receivers are permanently installed in the survey wellbore.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries, and (v) a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the seismic pulses are generated by a source placed at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

16. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

(i) placing a second plurality of spaced apart seismic receivers outside the survey wellbore;

(ii) detecting seismic waves reflected by earth'"'"'s formations in response to the induced seismic pulses by the receivers in the second plurality of receivers and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(iii) combining the signals from the first and second pluralities of receivers to obtain the geophysical information.

17. The method of claim 12 further comprising forming at least one wellbore in the hydrocarbon-bearing formation whose wellpath is at least partially determined from the obtained geophysical information.

18. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

(i) subsequently conducting seismic surveys to obtain secondary information about the subsurface formation, and

(ii) combining the obtained geophysical information and the secondary geophysical information to obtain an enhanced map of the subsurface formations.

19. The method of claim 12 further comprising producing a cross-well seismograph from the detected seismic waves.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein the first plurality of seismic receivers are selected from the set consisting of:

(i) geophones, (ii) accelerometers, (iii) hydrophones, and, (iv) fiber optic sensors.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein the first plurality of seismic receivers comprise fiber optic sensors, the method further comprising deploying a source of light downhole to provide light to the fiber optic sensors.

22. The method of claim 12 wherein the wherein the first plurality of seismic receivers are fiber optic sensors distributed along the wellbore.

23. The method of claim 1 wherein said subsurface formations are outside the producing reservoir.

24. The method of claim 23 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about said formations.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

26. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath proximate to a producing interval, said wellbore being proximate to and substantially parallel to a producing reservoir and distant from the surface of the earth;

(b) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations at a plurality of spaced positions in the survey wellbore;

(d) detecting by a plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by earth'"'"'s formations in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about the subsurface formations.

27. The method of claim 26 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations.

28. The method of claim 26 further comprising forming a production wellbore in the earth formation utilizing the obtained geophysical information.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the seismograph is a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein the plurality of seismic receivers are at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

32. The method of claim 26 wherein the plurality of spaced apart transmitters are permanently installed in the survey wellbore.

33. The method of claim 26 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries, and (iv) a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the plurality of seismic receivers are placed at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

36. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath;

(b) placing a first plurality of spaced seismic receivers in a substantially horizontal portion of the survey wellbore distant from the surface of the earth;

(c) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations;

(d) detecting by the plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by subsurface formations outside a producing reservoir in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about said subsurface formations.

37. The method of claim 36 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about said subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about said subsurface formations.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

39. The method of claim 37, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein the seismic pulses are generated by a source placed at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

41. The method of claim 36 further comprising:

(i) placing a second plurality of spaced seismic receivers outside the survey wellbore;

(ii) detecting seismic waves reflected by said subsurface formations in response to the induced seismic pulses by the receivers in the second plurality of receivers and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(iii) combining the signals from the first and second pluralities of receivers to obtain the geophysical information.

42. The method of claim 36 further comprising:

(i) subsequently conducting seismic surveys to obtain secondary information about said subsurface formations, and

(ii) combining the obtained geophysical information and the secondary geophysical information to obtain an enhanced map of the subsurface formations.

43. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath;

(b) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations at a plurality of spaced positions in a substantially horizontal portion of the survey wellbore and distant from the surface of the earth;

(d) detecting by a plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by subsurface formations outside a producing reservoir in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about the subsurface formations.

44. The method of claim 43 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about said subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about said subsurface formations.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein the plurality of seismic receivers are at a location that is one of (i) within the survey wellbore, (ii) at the surface, (iii) an offshore location, and (iv) a secondary wellbore.

47. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath formed as a sidebore from a production wellbore;

(b) placing a first plurality of spaced seismic receivers in the survey wellbore;

(c) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations;

(d) detecting by the plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by said subsurface formations in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about said subsurface formations.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the survey wellbore is formed so as to not intersect a hydrocarbon bearing formation.

49. The method of claim 47 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the subsurface formations.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

51. The method of claim 49, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.

52. The method of claim 47 further comprising:

(i) placing a second plurality of spaced seismic receivers outside the survey wellbore;

(ii) detecting seismic waves reflected by earth'"'"'s formations in response to the induced seismic pulses by the receivers in the second plurality of receivers and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(iii) combining the signals from the first and second pluralities of receivers to obtain the geophysical information.

53. The method of claim 47 further comprising:

(i) subsequently conducting seismic surveys to obtain secondary information about the subsurface formations, and

(ii) combining the obtained geophysical information and the secondary geophysical information to obtain an enhanced map of the subsurface formations.

54. A method of obtaining geophysical information about subsurface formations, comprising:

(a) forming a survey wellbore along a predetermined wellpath formed as a sidebore from a production wellbore;

(b) generating seismic pulses into the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations at a plurality of spaced positions in the survey wellbore;

(d) detecting by a plurality of seismic receivers seismic waves reflected by subsurface formations in response to the generated seismic pulses and generating signals responsive to such detected seismic waves; and

(e) processing the generated signals to obtain geophysical information about the subsurface formations.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the survey wellbore is formed so as to not intersect a hydrocarbon bearing formation.

56. The method of claim 54 further comprising combining the obtained geophysical information about the subsurface formations with other data to obtain enhanced geophysical information about the earth'"'"'s subsurface formations.

57. The method of claim 54 further comprising forming a production wellbore in the earth formation utilizing the obtained geophysical information.

58. The method of claim 54, wherein the enhanced geophysical information is one of (i) a seismograph of the subsurface formations, (ii) an acoustic velocity of a subsurface formation, (iii) distance between the survey wellbore and a bed boundary, and (iv) distance between at least two subsurface bed boundaries.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the seismograph is a 4-D map of the subsurface formations.
