1. A handheld device, comprising:

  • a global positioning system (GPS) receiver unit configured to provide first positioning information signals;

    a dead reckoning unit configured to provide second positioning information signals;

    a pointing element for pointing to a location to be measured;

    a measuring element for measuring the distance between the location to be measured and the handheld device;

    a level and heading element that determines a tilt and orientation of the handheld device;

    a processor coupled to receive the first and second positioning information signals, the distance between the location to be measured and the handheld device, and the level and headings of the handheld device, said processor computing the position of the location to be measured.
