Abstract

A method of and system for enabling pursuing police cruisers or the like to remotely and safely stop the engine of an appropriately equipped stolen or improperly operated vehicle, wherein the cruiser transmits a control signal to a receiver pre-provided in the vehicle, to initiate, preferably through modified engine control modules, a forced and over-riding multiple-stage reduction in fuel supplied to the engine, first to slow down the vehicle below idling speed, and then to stall the engine by total fuel shut off.

Claims

1. A method of remotely and safely automatically stopping a fuel-driven engine of a vehicle equipped with a receiver responsive to an externally transmitted signal, that comprises, transmitting the signal to the vehicle-to-be-stopped;

upon receipt of the signal by the receiver at the vehicle, and in response thereto, initiating in the vehicle a forced multiple-stage successive reduction in fuel supply to the engine;

first, to a stage of slow down of the vehicle below normal engine idling speed, and then to stall the engine completely in response to a final stage of total fuel shut-off.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the signal transmission is controlled by law enforcement personnel in pursuit of a misappropriated or improperly or dangerously operated vehicle, and the multiple-stage forced fuel reduction is timed by such personnel.

The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the vehicle is equipped with fuel injection and an engine management computer or center having a fuel injection control component, and said initiating step is effected, upon receipt of the transmitted signal, by controlling the fuel control component, first to reduce the fuel available to the engine below the engine idling speed, and then subsequently to shut off all fuel, stalling the engine.

4. The method as claimed in claim 3 wherein the reducing of the fuel to the engine is effected initially by intermittently pulsing the operation of the fuel control component.

The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the vehicle is equipped with a fuel pump system controlled by a carburetor and electrically powered, and said initiating step is effected, upon receipt of the transmitted signal, by intermittently supplying power to stage successive reductions in the electrical powering of the fuel pump to ultimate shut-down.

6. The method of claim 1 where said multiple-staged successive reduction in fuel supply to the engine is controlled by effectively staged valving of the fuel supply.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein an electrically powered relay controls a fuel pump for supplying the fuel to the engine, and said staged valving of the fuel supply to the engine is effected by intermittently pulsing the relay and then finally activating the relay to shut-off the pump.

8. The method claimed in claim 7 wherein after shut-down, the relay is re-set to enable normal fuel supply engine operation.

9. A system for remotely and safely stopping a vehicle fuel-driven engine controlled by a fuel supply pump and wherein the vehicle is also equipped with a receiver responsive to an externally transmitted signal, the system having, in combination with the receiver at the vehicle, a control circuit responsive to the receipt of the transmitted signal in the vehicle receiver connected thereupon to control the fuel pump to initiate a forced multiple-stage successive reduction in fuel supplied by the fuel pump to the engine;

first, to the stage of slow down of the vehicle below normal engine idling speed, and later to the stage of shut-off of all fuel to the engine to stall the engine.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein said multiple-stage successive reduction in fuel supplied by the fuel pump to the engine is controlled by effectively staged valving of the fuel supply.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein said staged valving is effected with a fuel pump relay provided with a circuit responsive to the received signal for enabling the initial intermittent pulsing of the relay, and then, after a predetermined time, final activation to shut-off the pump.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein the vehicle is equipped with fuel injection and an engine management computer or center having a fuel injection control component, and a circuit responsive to the receipt of the transmitted signal in the vehicle receiver for thereupon controlling the fuel control component, first to reduce the fuel available to the engine below the engine idling speed, and then subsequently to shut off all fuel, stalling the engine.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein said circuit initially causes the intermittent pulsing operation of the fuel control component.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the fuel pump is energized through a fuel pump relay, and the relay is initially intermittently pulsed and then finally activated to shut-off the pump.

15. The system of claim 9 wherein the vehicle is equipped with an electrically powered fuel pump system controlled by a carburetor, and, upon receipt of the receiver of the transmitted signal and in response thereto, said control circuit effects the intermittent supplying of power to the fuel pump system to stage successive reductions in the electrical powering of the fuel pump down to ultimate shut-down.

16. The system of claim 9 wherein the transmitted signal emanates from police or other enforcement personnel provided with a transmitter adapted to be operated by such personnel in pursuit of the vehicle as from a police vehicle, with the transmitter being activatable by such personnel at selected times.

17. A method of automatically shutting down a fuel-driven engine at a remote location which is equipped with a receiver responsive to an externally transmitted signal, that comprises, transmitting the signal to the remote location;

upon receipt of the signal by the receiver and in response thereto, initiating at the remote location, a forced multiple-stage successive reduction in fuel supply to the engine;

to a first stage of slow down of the engine below normal engine idling speed, and then to stalling the engine completely in response to a final stage of total fuel shut-off.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the first stage involves reducing the fuel available to the engine to below engine idling speed, and then subsequently to the complete fuel shut-down stage.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the initial stage reducing of the fuel supply is effected by intermittently pulsing the operation of the fuel supply to the engine in response to the received signal.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein, after shut-down, the fuel supply is reset and restored to enable normal engine operation.
