1. A method of conveying and sorting coded articles, comprising the steps of:

  • A) conveying non-oriented articles through an orienting mechanism for orienting the non-oriented articles in single file and at predetermined intervals;

    thereafterB) conveying the articles past a reading/sensing mechanism which reads codes on the articles and senses a spacing between successive articles;

    thereafter(C) conveying properly read and properly spaced articles to respective branch lines of a sorter section in accordance with data read from the codes;

    (D) diverting, at a location upstream of the sorter section, improperly read articles and improperly spaced articles; and

    (E) conveying the diverted articles back to the orienting mechanism.
