1. A gas generant composition, hydrated or anhydrous, comprising a first nitrogen-containing fuel and/or a first oxidizer, and at least one coordination complex, said coordination complex represented by the formula:

  •

    space="preserve" listing-type="equation">(NM).sub.u (M'"'"').sub.x [M".sub.y (NO.sub.2).sub.z ]wherein;

    (NM) is a nonmetal cation selected from the group consisting of ammonium, hydrazinium, guanidinium, aminoguanidinium, polyaminoguanidinium, hydroxylaminium, and aromatic and aliphatic amine cations;

    M'"'"' is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal;

    M" is a coordination metal selected from the transition metals of Groups 4-12 of the Periodic Table;

    u=1,2,3, or 4;

    x=0,1,2, or 3;

    y=1,2, or 3; and

    z=4 or 6 nitrito/nitro groups as determined by the required stoichiometry of the nonmetal NM and the metal M'"'"'.
