Abstract

A cell necrosis apparatus has a flexible introducer including a lumen and a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue. An energy delivery device is positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue. The energy delivery device includes a first RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion and a second RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion. The first and second RF electrodes are deployable with curvature from the introducer at a selected tissue site in a lateral direction away from the periphery of the introducer.

Claims

1. A cell necrosis apparatus, comprising:

a flexible introducer including a lumen and a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue;

an energy delivery device including a first RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion and a second RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion, the first and second RF electrodes being positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue and deployable with curvature from the introducer at a selected tissue site in a lateral direction away from the periphery of the introducer the first and second RF electrodes including in a deployed state a first curved section, a perpendicular section and a second curved section .

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an RF electrode advancement member coupled to the first and second RF electrodes and configured to advance the first and second RF electrodes through tissue.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the introducer is configured to receive a fluidic medium.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first RF electrode includes a hollow lumen configured to receive a fluidic medium.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the second RF electrode includes a hollow lumen configured to receive a fluidic medium.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the introducer.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the first RF electrode.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the second RF electrode.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an elongated member, the introducer being positionable in the elongated member; and

an obturator positionable in the elongated member.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the obturator has a piercing distal end.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a sensor coupled to the first RF electrode.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising:

a feedback control coupled to the sensor and to the first RF electrode.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the sensor is a thermal sensor.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a sensor coupled to the introducer.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first RF electrode is formed of a shaped memory alloy.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first RF electrode is formed of stainless steel.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second RF electrodes are deployable to surround a selected tissue site.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the first and second RF electrodes are deployable to surround a tumor.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an impedance measurement apparatus coupled to the energy delivery device.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the impedance measurement apparatus comprises:

a controller;

a microprocessor coupled to the controller; and

a feedback control including circuitry, wherein RF energy is delivered to a tissue site, a measurement of a voltage and current of a tissue site are determined and the current adjusted according to the measurement of the voltage and current of the tissue site.

21. A cell necrosis apparatus, comprising:

a flexible introducer including a lumen and a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue;

an energy delivery device including a first RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion, a second RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion and a third RF electrode with a tissue piercing distal portion, the first second and third RF electrodes being positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue and deployable with curvature in a radially divergent configuration when extended beyond the introducer, the first, second and third RF electrodes including in a deployed state a first curved section, a perpendicular section and a second curved section.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

an RF electrode advancement member coupled to the first, second and third RF electrodes and configured to advance the first and second RF electrodes through tissue.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the introducer is configured to receive a fluidic medium.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the first RF electrode includes a hollow lumen configured to receive a fluidic medium.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the introducer.

26. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the first RF electrode.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, further comprising:

an insulator positioned in a surrounding relation to at least a portion of the second RF electrode.

28. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

an elongated member, the introducer being positionable in the elongated member; and

an obturator positionable in the elongated member.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the obturator has a piercing distal end.

30. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

a sensor coupled to the first RF electrode.

31. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the sensor is a thermal sensor.

32. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

a sensor coupled to the introducer.

33. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the first RF electrode is formed of a shaped memory alloy.

34. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the first RF electrode is formed of stainless steel.

35. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the first, second and third RF electrodes are deployable to surround a selected tissue site.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the first, second and third RF electrodes are deployable to surround a tumor.

37. The apparatus of claim 30, further comprising:

a feedback control coupled to the sensor and the first RF electrode.

38. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:

an impedance measurement apparatus coupled to the energy delivery device.

39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein the impedance measurement apparatus comprises:

a controller;

a microprocessor coupled to the controller; and

a feedback control including circuitry, wherein RF energy is delivered to a tissue site, a measurement of a voltage and current of a tissue site are determined and the current adjusted according to the measurement of the voltage and current of the tissue site.
