1. An apparatus for monitoring electrical signals appearing on a rotating shaft, comprising:

  • a probe for electrically engaging the rotating shaft and producing a probe signal corresponding to the electrical signals appearing on the rotating shaft;

    an analog circuit for receiving the probe signal and operating in at least first and second modes of operation for producing first and second mode signals, respectively, corresponding to first and second parameters, respectively, of the probe signal;

    analog control circuitry responsive to analog control signals for switching the analog circuit between the first and second modes of operation; and

    a microprocessor based analyzer for selecting and receiving one of the first and second mode signals, for analyzing the first and second mode signals, for storing data corresponding to the first and second mode signals, and for producing and transmitting the analog control signals to the analog circuit to select a first or second mode of operation of the analog circuit.
