Abstract

A portable system is provided that is operational for determining, with three dimensional resolution, the position of a buried object or a proximately positioned object that may move in space or air or gas. The system has a plurality of receivers for detecting the signal from a target antenna and measuring the phase thereof with respect to a reference signal. The relative permittivity and conductivity of the medium in which the object is located is used along with the measured phase signal to determine a distance between the object and each of the plurality of receivers. Knowing these distances, an iteration technique is provided for solving equations simultaneously to provide position coordinates. The system may also be used for tracking movement of an object within close range of the system by sampling and recording subsequent positions of the object. A dipole target antenna, when positioned adjacent to a buried object, may be energized using a separate transmitter which couples energy to the target antenna through the medium. The target antenna then preferably resonates at a different frequency, such as a second harmonic of the transmitter frequency.

Claims

1. A method for locating an object that is positioned within a material having a relative permittivity and a conductivity, comprising:

obtaining an indicia of said relative permittivity of said material in which said object is positioned;

radiating a transmitter signal into said material, said transmitter signal having a transmitter frequency;

passively reradiating said transmitter signal as a reradiated signal;

detecting said reradiated signal with a receiver antenna;

determining an indicia of phase of said reradiated signal; and

determining an indicia of distance from said receiver antenna to said object using said indicia of phase and said indicia of said relative permeability.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

measuring an indicia of said conductivity of said material in which said object is positioned.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting said reradiated signal with each of at least two receivers.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

determining said indicia of phase of said reradiated signal at each of said at least two receivers.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

determining respective indicias of distance between said object and each of said at least two receivers.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

determining a relative position of said object from said respective indicias of distances between said object and each of said at least two receivers.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of passively reradiating further comprises:

moving a target antenna through said object.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of passively reradiating further comprises:

reradiating a signal having a different frequency from said transmitter frequency.

9. A method for locating a buried object that is buried in a material having a conductivity and a relative permittivity, comprising:

producing a transmitter signal having a transmitter frequency;

filtering said transmitter signal to remove harmonics of said transmitter frequency;

providing said buried object with a dipole target antenna having a non-linear element electrically connected thereto;

energizing said dipole target antenna with said transmitter signal, said energized target antenna reradiating a reradiated signal, said reradiated signal having a frequency that is different from said transmitter frequency due to said non-linear element; and

receiving said reradiated signal.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

selecting said transmitter frequency from a range of frequencies determined to be optimal for use when said material is a type of soil.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

measuring an indicia of said conductivity of said material in which said object is buried.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

determining an indicia of distance from said reradiated signal, said indicia of distance being related to the length between said dipole target antenna and a receiver antenna.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

determining a location of said buried object from said indicia of distance.

14. A system for locating an object disposed within a medium having a conductivity and a relative permittivity, comprising:

a transmitter for producing a transmit signal, said transmit signal having at least one transmitter frequency;

a target antenna for said object, said target antenna providing a reradiated signal;

a first receiver, said first receiver being tuned to said reradiated signal;

a calculation unit having a memory element operative for storage of an indicia of said conductivity, said calculation unit and said memory element having circuitry for determining an indicia of distance between said transmitter and said target antenna.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein:

said memory element is operative for storage of an indicia of said relative permittivity.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein said medium is comprised of earth.

17. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

an input for placing an indicia of said conductivity within said memory element.

18. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a measurement component for determining at least one of an indicia of said conductivity or an indicia of said relative permittivity of said medium.

19. The system of claim 14, wherein said target antenna comprises:

a dipole antenna.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein said target antenna further comprises:

a non-linear element located at the approximate center of said dipole antenna for producing a harmonic of said transmitter frequency.

21. The system of claim 14, wherein said target antenna further comprises:

a trap positioned along said target antenna.

22. The system of claim 14, wherein said target antenna further comprises:

an unbalanced load for said target antenna.

23. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a transmitter antenna with an unbalanced feed.

24. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a second receiver, said second receiver being tuned to said reradiated signal.

25. The system of claim 21, further comprising:

a third receiver, said third receiver being tuned to said reradiated signal.

46. The system of claim 24, further comprising:

a distance calculator keyed to a reference signal for determining a phase of said detected reradiated signal at each of said three receivers with respect to said reference signal.

26. A system for locating an object proximately positioned with respect to said system, comprising:

a microwave transmitter circuit for producing a transmit signal in the 10 to 100 MHz frequency range;

a target antenna for said object, said target antenna being energized by said transmit signal;

a plurality of microwave receivers, each of said plurality of microwave receivers measuring the phase of the transmitted signal and having a known relative position with respect to said microwave transmitter; and

a calculation unit, using the phase measurements from each of the receivers, for calculating respective distances between each of said plurality of microwave receivers and said target antenna, said calculation unit determining an X-Y position of said target antenna that may be expressed in terms of measurement units from a selected reference point.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein:

said plurality of receivers includes two microwave receivers;

said calculation unit is operable to process signals from said two microwave receivers to determine said X-Y position of said target antenna.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein:

said plurality of microwave receivers includes at least three microwave receivers;

said calculation unit is operable to process signals from said at least three microwave receivers to determine an X-Y-Z position of said target antenna.

29. The system of claim 26, further comprising:

a register containing indicia of a relative permittivity surrounding said object.

30. The system of claim 26, further comprising:

a register containing indicia of a conductivity surrounding said object.

31. The system of claim 26, wherein said target antenna is movable within said object.

32. The system of claim 26, further comprising:

a microwave transmitter antenna for radiating said transmit signal, said target antenna being energized to produce a reradiated signal having a phase that varies with distance to each of said plurality of microwave receivers, said calculation unit having circuitry for determining a respective phase detected at each of said plurality of microwave receivers.

33. The system of claim 26, wherein:

said target antenna for said object is a dipole antenna.

34. The system of claim 33, further comprising:

a non-linear element mounted at a center portion of said dipole antenna.

35. The system of claim 34, wherein:

said non-linear element is less than one cubic centimeter in volume.

36. The system of claim 26, wherein:

said target antenna includes a trap along its length.

37. The system of claim 26, wherein:

said target antenna is a loop antenna.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein:

said target antenna includes a non-linear element positioned in said loop.

39. A system for locating a buried object, said object being buried within a substantially solid material, said system comprising:

at least one transmitter with a dipole transmitter antenna, said at least one transmitter broadcasting a transmitter signal in the range of 10 to 100 Mhz;

a dipole antenna positioned for locating said object, said dipole antenna having a non-linear element mounted thereto, said dipole antenna being responsive to said transmitter signal for producing a reradiated signal, said reradiated signal being a harmonic of said transmitter signal; and

at least one receiver for detecting said reradiated signal.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein:

said dipole antenna having a length between 0.25 and 0.75 meters.

41. The system of claim 39, wherein:

said dipole antenna is movable with respect to said buried object.

42. The system of claim 39, wherein:

said non-linear element is less than about one cubic centimeter in size.

43. The system of claim 39, further comprising:

a register to store an indicia of complex permittivity of said material.

44. The system of claim 39, further comprising:

a register to store an indicia of conductivity of said buried object.

45. The system of claim 39, further comprising:

three receivers for detecting said reradiated signal.
