1. A probe for detecting a chemical, the probe comprising:
- a single mode optical fiber having a tapered portion having a single taper in which a diameter of the optical fiber is reduced from a larger diameter to a smaller diameter; and
a coating disposed on a surface of the tapered portion of the optical fiber, the coating having a property of binding with the chemical when brought in contact with the chemical.

Abstract
An optical fiber is tapered, preferably adiabatically, and has a material coated on it for chemical bonding with fluorophores. When the fluorophores couple with the material, evanescent radiation generated fibers causes the fluorophores to fluoresce, and the fluorescence is coupled back into the fiber.
