Abstract

A device for irradiating human vessel interior walls including a perfusion balloon catheter having a radioactive perfusion tube affixed therein. Preferably, the balloon is helical, having adjacent helical strand windings closely spaced in contact upon inflation to minimize trapped blood and reduce attenuation. The perfusion tube can be made radioactive by inclusion of a helical, radioactive metal coil in the perfusion tube wall. In use, the catheter can be advanced over a guide wire to a stenosis, inflated to dilate the site, with beta radiation from the coil passing through the device to the vessel walls, relatively unhindered by blood.

Claims

1. A device for irradiating vessel walls comprising:

an elongate tubular member having a proximal portion and a distal portion, said tubular member including an inflation lumen extending the length thereof;

an

a perfusion head attached to said elongate member distal portion, said perfusion head including an inflatable balloon in fluid communication with said inflation lumen, said perfusion head having a perfusion tube forming a perfusion lumen extending longitudinally through said balloon, said perfusion tube, at least in part, containing a radiation emitting material fixedly disposed thereon.

2. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein said perfusion tube includes a coiled member affixed within an extending through said balloon to support said perfusion lumen walls during balloon inflation.

3. A device as recited in claim 2, wherein said coiled tubular member includes a radiation emitting material.

4. A device as recited in claim 3, wherein said coiled tubular member is formed of metal.

5. A device as recited in claim 2, wherein said inflatable balloon is formed of a tubular member wrapped around said perfusion tube to form multiple adjacent windings.

6. A device as recited in claim 5, wherein said inflatable balloon adjacent windings are closely spaced or in contact with inflated to minimize blood trapped between said balloon and a vessel wall to reduce attenuation.

7. A device as recited in claim 5, wherein said central shaft portion includes said perfusion tube.

8. A method for treating a stenosed vessel site comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter for irradiating vessel walls including an elongate tubular member having a proximal portion and a distal portion, said tubular member including an inflation lumen, said catheter further including a perfusion head attached to said elongate member distal portion, said perfusion head including an inflatable balloon in fluid communication with said inflation lumen, said perfusion head having a perfusion tube therethrough forming a perfusion lumen, said perfusion tube at least in part, containing a radiation emitting material fixedly disposed thereon;

inserting said device into the vasculature of a patient such that the perfusion head is positioned adjacent to a treatment site;

inflating said inflatable balloon; and

exposing said treatment site to radiation from said radioactive wall through the balloon.

9. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein said inflating step includes dilating said stenosed site.

10. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein said radiation is beta radiation.

11. A method as recited in claim 10, wherein said balloon is a helical balloon including at least one helical strand configured into a plurality of windings about said perfusion lumen wall, said windings being substantially adjacent to one another.

12. A method as recited in claim 11, wherein said catheter includes a guide wire lumen and said catheter is inserted over a guide wire in said inserting step.

13. A method as recited in claim 11, wherein said radioactive wall includes a metal coil.

14. A method as recited in claim 11, wherein said radioactive wall includes a radioactive metal coil.
