1. In a wireless communications system having service areas partitioned into a plurality of cells, wherein a set of communications channels are available for allocation among said cells, an improvement in said system comprising:
- means for autonomously collecting traffic demand and interference data for at least a portion of said channels available for allocation during normal operation of said system; and
means for automatically allocating channels among said cells as a function of said traffic demand and interference data.

Abstract
A self-configurable wireless system is provided which can determine its own channel assignments without the need for advance planning or human intervention. Such a system is implemented as an improvement to a wireless communications network having service areas partitioned into a plurality of cells, that improvement being implemented through a cooperative combination of: (1) a means for autonomously collecting data at the cells in respect to serving signal/interference measurements and other relevant data; and (2) a means for automatically carrying out a selected channel assignment algorithm in response to data provided by the data collecting means.

11. In a wireless communications system having service areas partitioned into a plurality of cells, wherein a set of communications channels is available for allocation among said cells, a method for allocating said channels to said cells on a substantially automated basis comprising the steps of:

providing an initial allocation of said channels among said cells; autonomously collecting serving signal and interference data during normal operation of said communications system, for at least a portion of said channels initially allocated among said cells; processing said collected serving signal and interference data to form statistical estimates of serving signal strength and interference signal strength said statistical estimates being functionally related to a methodology for allocation of said channels among said cells; reallocating channels among said cells based on application of said statistical estimates in said channel allocation methodology; periodically repeating said collecting and said processing steps; and upon a current set of said statistical estimates being found to deviate from a next-preceding set of said statistical estimates by a predetermined criterion, carrying out said reallocating step based on said current set of said statistical estimates. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21)
