1. A process for preparing an anisotropic melt-phase forming polymer consisting essentially of recurring units I, II, III, IV and V, wherein:

  • recurring unit I is;

    ##STR20## which process comprises reacting the aromatic diacid from which recurring unit IV is derived and acetate form of the reactants from which recurring units I, II, III and V are derived in the presence of a catalytic amount of a catalyst system comprising a potassium catalyst in combination with a cobalt catalyst.
