Abstract

Apparatus and methods for regulating the appetite of an individual suffering from morbid obesity, the apparatus including a plurality of stimulation electrodes arranged longitudinally on at least one electrode support shaft for insertion within the hypothalamus for outputting electrical discharges to specific sites within the hypothalamus. Each of the plurality of stimulation electrodes may be independently controlled. Electrical discharge of various frequencies transmitted from one or more of the plurality of stimulation electrodes, and delivered to a region of the hypothalamus that is involved with either stimulating or inhibiting appetite, may be used to regulate appetite in the individual. Alternatively, an individual'"'"'s appetite may be regulated by the microinfusion from at least one microinfusion catheter of an appropriate quantity of a suitable drug to a distinct site or region within the hypothalamus.

Claims

1. A stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe for stereotactic placement in the hypothalamus of a patient, comprising:

at least one electrode support shaft configured to be implanted within a hypothalamus of a patient, each at least one electrode support shaft having a plurality of stimulation electrodes, each of said plurality of stimulation electrodes capable of independently outputting electrical discharges to the patient'"'"'s hypothalamus; and

a macrocatheter for housing said at least one electrode support shaft, said macrocatheter including a magnetic positioning unit located at a distal end of the macrocatheter and configured to allow the macrocatheter to be positioned to a location adjacent to the patient'"'"'s hypothalamus.

The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe as claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one electrode support shaft comprises a plurality of electrode support shafts configured to be implanted into a hypothalamus of a patient, such that after implantation during as single surgical procedure, said hypothalamic obesity probe is capable of mapping the hypothalamus of an obesity patient.

3. The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of stimulation electrodes functions as a monopolar stimulation electrode.

4. The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of stimulation electrodes functions as a bipolar stimulation electrode.

5. The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of stimulation electrodes is capable of independently outputting electrical discharges over a frequency range of from about 10 Hz to about 400 Hz.

The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity probe as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes are configured to output electrical discharges to neurons of a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus, wherein such electrical discharges are configured to affect a patient'"'"'s appetite.

The stimulation trials hypothalamic obesity of claim 1, further comprising a stimulation device, wherein the stimulation device is configured to generate electrical signals that are applied to the stimulation electrodes of the at least one electrode support shaft, and wherein when the at least one electrode support shaft is implanted into a hypothalamus of a patient, the electrical signals affect the patient'"'"'s appetite.

8. A hypothalamic obesity probe comprising:

a plurality of rigid electrode support shafts configured to be implanted in a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus wherein a plurality of electrodes are formed on each electrode support shaft, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is configured to non-destructively stimulate neurons of a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus; and

a macrocatheter configured to house the plurality support shafts and to guide the plurality of electrode support shafts to a location adjacent a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus so that the plurality of electrode support shafts can be implanted into the patient'"'"'s hypothalamus.

9. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, wherein the plurality of electrode support shafts are configured to be located in or on separate areas of a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus.

10. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, wherein at least one of the plurality of electrodes comprises a monopolar electrode.

11. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, wherein at least one of the plurality of electrodes comprises a bipolar electrode.

12. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, wherein the macrocatheter is configured to be magnetically positioned.

13. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 12, wherein the macrocatheter includes a magnetic unit that allows the macrocatheter to be magnetically positioned.

14. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 13, wherein the magnetic unit is located at a distal end of the macrocatheter.

15. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, wherein each of the plurality of stimulation electrodes is configured to output electrical signals over a frequency range of approximately 10-400 Hz.

The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 8, further comprising a stimulation device, wherein the stimulation device is configured to apply electrical signals to the electrodes of the electrode support shafts, and wherein when the plurality of electrode support shafts are implanted in a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus, the electrical signals affect the patient'"'"'s appetite.

17. A hypothalamic obesity probe, comprising:

a plurality of electrode support shafts configured to be inserted into a patient'"'"'s hypothalamus, wherein each electrode support shaft includes a plurality of electrodes arranged along a length of the support shaft, wherein each electrode support shaft is sufficiently rigid that it can be pushed into the patient'"'"'s brain tissue without the use of a supplemental support; and

a macrocatheter configured to house the plurality of electrode support shafts while the electrode support shafts are positioned adjacent a selected portion of the patient'"'"'s brain.

The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 17, further comprising a stimulation device, wherein the stimulation device is configured to apply electrical signals to the electrodes of the electrode support shafts, and wherein when the plurality of electrode support shafts are implanted in a patient'"'"'s brain, the electrical signals affect the patient'"'"'s appetite.

19. The hypothalamic obesity probe of claim 17, wherein each electrode support shaft has a smooth profile and is sufficiently thin such that no substantial damage is caused to the patient'"'"'s brain tissue when the electrode support shaft is inserted into the patient'"'"'s brain.
