Abstract

A variable geometry transducer diaphragm having an electrical conductor layer, with a conductor pattern, is positioned on an insulating layers. Magnets used to create an electromagnetic field around the conductors may be placed in the insulating layer or formed as part of the frame supporting the diaphragm. Alternatively, the frame may be constructed to function as plates of a capacitor creating an electrostatic field around the diaphragm.

Claims

1. A flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising:

a first layer of electrically insulating material; and

an electrical conductor layer, attached to said first layer of electrically insulating material, which incorporates both a conductor pattern and permanently magnetized material.

2. The diaphragm of claim 1 further comprising a second layer of electrically insulating material wherein said electrical conductor layer is positioned between said first and second insulating layers.

5. The diaphragm of claim 1 wherein said diaphragm has a curvilinear cross section.

6. The diaphragm of claim 2 wherein said second layer of electrically insulating material is non-conductive thermosetting resin.

25. The diaphragm of claim 1 adapted to act in an audio loudspeaker.

26. The diaphragm of claim 1 adapted to act in a microphone.

3. A flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising:

a first layer of electrically insulating material formed of one of Kapton or Mylar; and

an electrical conductor layer, attached to said first layer of electrically insulating material, which incorporates both a conductor pattern and permanently magnetized material.

4. A flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising:

a plurality of layers of electrically insulating material;

a plurality of electrical conductor layers, each electrical conductor layer incorporating both a conductor pattern and permanently magnetized material; and

wherein each of said electrical conductor layers is interposed between electrically insulating layers to form a multilayered diaphragm.

7. A flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising:

(a) a first layer of electrically insulating material;

(b) a second layer of electrically insulating material;

(c) an electrical conductor layer having a conductor pattern and positioned between said first and second insulating layers;

(d) a third layer of electrically insulating material; and

,

(e) a layer of permanently magnetized material positioned between said second and third insulating layers.

8. The diaphragm of claim 7 wherein said conductor pattern is formed of conductive ink.

9. The diaphragm of claim 7 wherein said first and said second insulating layers are formed of one of Kapton or Mylar.

10. The diaphragm of claim 7 further comprising:

a plurality of said insulating layers;

a plurality of said electrical conductor layers; and

a plurality of said layers of permanently magnetized material to form a multilayered diaphragm.

11. The diaphragm of claim 7 wherein said diaphragm has a curvilinear cross section.

12. An electroacoustic transducer comprising:

a flexible diaphragm including;

(a) a first layer of electrically insulating material; and

(b) an electrical conductor layer attached to said first layer of electrically insulating material which incorporates both a conductor pattern and permanently magnetized material;

a frame for supporting said diaphragm having a first portion permanently charged to a first magnetic polarity.

13. An electroacoustic transducer comprising:

(a) a series of permanent magnets spaced at a distance from each other;

(b) a flexible diaphragm woven around and between said series of magnets in a sinusoidal fashion.

14. The transducer of claim 13 further comprising a frame for supporting said magnets and said diaphragm.

15. The transducer of claim 14 wherein said magnets are formed integral to said frame.

16. The transducer of claim 15 wherein said frame and said magnets are formed of one of a magnetic powder or scintered metal matrix.

17. The transducer of claim 13 wherein said diaphragm comprises a plurality of individual diaphragms wherein each one of said individual diaphragms spans a distance between a set of two adjacent magnets.

18. The transducer of claim 17 wherein said plurality of individual diaphragms are constructed to have different frequency response ranges.

19. The transducer of claim 13 wherein said diaphragm further comprises:

(a) a first layer of electrically insulating material;

(b) a second insulating layer of electrically insulating material;

(c) an electrical conductor layer having a conductor pattern and positioned between said first and second insulating layers.

20. The transducer of claim 13 wherein said frame is non-ferrous.

21. A method for constructing a flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising the step of forming both an electrical conductor pattern of conductive metal and a pattern of permanently magnetized material on a layer of electrically insulating material.

22. A method for constructing a flexible diaphragm for an electroacoustic transducer comprising the steps of:

(a) forming a first layer of electrically insulating material;

(b) forming a second layer of electrically insulating material;

(c) forming an electrical conductor layer having a conductor pattern between said first and second insulating layers;

(d) forming a third layer of electrically insulating material;

(e) forming a layer of permanently magnetized material between said second and third insulating layers.

23. A method for constructing an electroacoustic transducer comprising the steps of:

(a) arranging a series of permanent magnets spaced at a distance from each other; and

(b) weaving a diaphragm through said series of permanent magnets in a sinusoidal fashion.

24. A method for constructing a transducer according to claim 23 wherein the step of weaving a diaphragm comprises the step of placing a plurality of individual diaphragms between said magnets, each one of said plurality of diaphragms spanning a distance between an adjacent pair of magnets.

27. A flexible diaphragm for an antenna comprising:

a first layer of electrically insulating material; and

an electrical conductor layer, attached to said first layer of electrically insulating material, which incorporates both a conductor pattern and permanently magnetized material.
