1. A user-controlled fault detection system for detecting subscriber line faults on a telephone subscriber line during a ring mode, comprising:

  • a user interface adapted to enter user-programmable threshold values corresponding to subscriber ring mode line fault conditions;

    a fault threshold memory, coupled to the user interface, and adapted to store the entered threshold values;

    a current level detector adapted to identify a ring mode current during ringing on the telephone subscriber line; and

    a processing unit adapted to compare the ring mode current on the telephone subscriber line to the entered threshold values stored in the fault threshold memory, and to identify an occurrence of a fault as distinguished from an off-hook condition on the subscriber line in response thereto.
