1. A thermometer for measuring a patient'"'"'s temperature, comprising:
- a conductive tip for absorbing heat from a patient'"'"'s mouth and having a temperature associated therewith;
a temperature sensor thermally coupled to the conductive tip for sensing a temperature of the conductive tip;
a heater thermally coupled to the conductive tip, the heater heating the conductive tip after the thermometer has been inserted in the patient; and
a microcontroller coupled to the heater and temperature sensor for determining a current temperature of the conductive tip;
wherein the microcontroller alternately enables heating, delay, and reading of the temperature of the conductive tip in diminishing increments as the temperature of the conductive tip becomes stable.

Abstract
A digital thermometer, having a sensing tip that is integral with a heater, a display, and a microcontroller which samples for rise time and proportionally operates the heater to increase the temperature of the sensing tip in an alternating control sequence that includes a post-heating delay and, thus, the sensing tip quickly arrives at a stable temperature when no further heating is required.

9. A thermometer for measuring a patient'"'"'s temperature, comprising:
-
a conductive tip for absorbing heat from a patient and having a temperature associated therewith; a temperature sensor thermally coupled to the conductive tip for sensing a temperature of the conductive tip; a heater thermally coupled to and heating the conductive tip; and a microcontroller coupled to the heater and temperature sensor for determining a current temperature of the conductive tip; wherein after the thermometer is inserted in the patient'"'"'s mouth, the microcontroller activates the heater and enables heating, delay, and reading of the temperature of the conductive tip in diminishing increments as the temperature of the conductive tip becomes stable. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12)
