Cannulated tissue anchor system
First Claim
1. A method of inserting a cannulated tissue anchor into tissue to be treated at a surgical site comprising the steps of:
- providing a cannulated tissue anchor;
providing a tissue anchor inserter comprising an elongated needle for being received within the bore of said tissue anchor, a cannulated shaft having a receiving chamber for slidably receiving said needle and said tissue anchor and a pusher means for engaging said tissue anchor and pushing it out of said receiving chamber;
extending said needle distally from said receiving chamber;
inserting said needle into the bore of said tissue anchor;
retracting said needle and said tissue anchor into said receiving chamber;
locating the surgical site at which said tissue anchor is to be placed;
extending said needle from said receiving chamber and into said surgical site;
advancing said pusher means distally to push said tissue anchor distally along said extended needle and into said surgical site; and
removing said needle from said tissue.

Abstract
A system for inserting a cannulated tissue anchor during endoscopic surgical procedures. The system incorporates an elongated generally cylindrical tissue anchor having a plurality of barbs outwardly extending from its body and a transverse head situated at its proximal end. The head is elongated along a major axis which is misaligned relative to the rows of barbs on the body of the tissue anchor in order to enhance retention of the anchor within selected tissue. The anchor may be inserted during an endoscopic surgical procedure by a single-handed operation utilizing an instrument having a longitudinally slidable needle for guiding the anchor into place and a longitudinally slidable push rod for pushing the anchor along the needle. The system incorporates a package/loading device to facilitate the assembly of a cannulated tissue anchor with the inserter, the package/loading device being provided with a means for guiding the inserter needle through the axial bore of the tissue anchor.

2. A method of inserting a cannulated tissue anchor into tissue to be treated at a surgical site comprising the steps of:
-
providing a cannulated tissue anchor, said tissue anchor having a bore therethrough; providing an elongated needle having a distal end and a proximal end, said needle adapted to be slidably received within the bore of said tissue anchor; placing said needle into the bore of said tissue anchor; providing a pusher means for moving said tissue anchor relative to said needle; positioning said distal end of said needle adjacent the tissue at the surgical site; moving said needle into the tissue without moving said tissue anchor into said tissue; and moving said pusher means toward said tissue and relative to said needle to move said tissue anchor from said needle into the tissue. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5)
