Abstract

A stent having varying outward radial force along its length. In use, the stent can provide greater force in vessel regions requiring greater force and less force in regions requiring less. In particular, more force is provided in the narrowed, center of a stenosis, while not applying too much force to the adjoining healthy tissue area. Greater stent expansion is provided in wider vessel geometries and less stent expansion in narrower regions. Varying force is achieved varying the number of elements, the density of elements, and the thickness of the elements.

Claims

1. A self-expanding stent made of a shape memory material, the stent having a length, the stent expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state, the radius of the stent in the unexpanded state constant along the length of the stent, the stent comprising:

a tubular shaped structure, said structure having a radially outward biased force, said force being varied along said length, said tubular structure having a first end region, a middle region, and a second end region, wherein said force is weakest in said first end region, stronger in said middle region than in said first region, and stronger in said second end region than in said middle region.

2. The stent of claim 1 where said structure includes at least one helically wound wire.

3. The stent of claim 2 wherein the structure consists of a single helically wound wire.

4. The stent of claim 2 wherein the helically wound wire includes a plurality of turns, the turns having an axial spacing, the axial spacing being greater in the first end region than in the middle region and greater in the middle region than in the second end region.

5. The stent of claim 2 comprising a plurality of helically wound wires.

6. The stent of claim 5 wherein the helically wound wires are interwoven.

7. The stent of claim 5 wherein the density of wire per unit length in said first region is less than the density of wire per unit length in said middle region and wherein the density of wire per unit length in said middle region is less than the density of wire per unit length in said second region.

8. The stent of claim 1 having more wire elements per unit length in the second end region than in the middle region and more wire elements per unit length in the middle region than in the first end region.

9. The stent of claim 1 formed of wire wherein the number of wires increases from the first end region to the second end region.

10. The stent of claim 1 formed of a material wherein the amount of material increases from the first end region to the second end region.

11. The stent of claim 1 formed of Nitinol.

12. A stent having a length, the stent expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state, the radius of the stent in the unexpanded state constant along the length of the stent, the stent comprising:

a tubular shaped structure, said structure having a radially outward biased force, said force being varied along said length, said tubular structure having a first end region, a middle region, and a second end region, wherein said force is weakest in said first end region, stronger in said middle region than in said first region, and stronger in said second end region than in said middle region,

the structure including a plurality of intersecting elements, the intersecting elements intersecting at a junction including an amount of material, the junction material amount being greater in the second end region than in the middle region and greater in the middle region than in the first end region.

13. A stent having a length, the stent expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state, the radius of the stent in the unexpanded state constant along the length of the stent, the stent comprising:

a tubular shaped structure, said structure having a radially outward biased force, said force being varied along said length, said tubular structure having a first end region, a middle region, and a second end region, wherein said force is weakest in said first end region, stronger in said middle region than in said first region, and stronger in said second end region than in said middle region,

the structure including a plurality of zig-zag bands, adjacent zig-zag bands connected by interconnecting elements.

The stent of claim 13 wherein the thickness of the zig-zag bands in the second end region is greater than the thickness of the zig-zag bands in the middle region and the thickness of the zig-zag bands in the middle region is greater than the thickness of the zig-zag bands in the first end region.

15. The stent of claim 13 wherein the width of the zig-zag bands in the second end region is greater than the width of the zig-zag bands in the middle region and the width of the zig-zag bands in the middle region is greater than the width of the zig-zag bands in the first end region.

16. The stent of claim 13, zig-zag band characterized by a frequency, the frequency of the zig-zag bands increasing from the first end region to the middle region and from the middle region to the second end region.

17. The stent of claim 13, each zig-zag band characterized by an amplitude, the amplitude of the zig-zag bands increasing from the first end region to the middle region and from the middle region to the second end region.

18. A stent having a length, the stent expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state, the radius of the stent in the unexpanded state constant along the length of the stent, the stent comprising:

a tubular shaped structure, said structure having a radially outward biased force, said force being varied along said length, said tubular structure having a first end region, a middle region, and a second end region, wherein said force is weakest in said first end region, stronger in said middle region than in said first region, and stronger in said second end region than in said middle region,

wherein the thickness of the tubular structure in the second end region is greater than the thickness of the tubular structure in the middle region and the thickness of the tubular structure in the middle region is greater than the thickness of the tubular structure in the first end region.

19. A self-expanding stent made of a shape memory material, the stent having a length, the stent expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state, the stent comprising:

a tubular shaped structure, said structure having a means for exerting a radially outward force, said force being varied along said length, said tubular structure having a first end region, a middle region, and a second end region, wherein said force is weakest in said first end region, stronger in said middle region than in said first region, and stronger in said second end region than in said middle region.
