Abstract

A location tagged data provision and display system. A personal communication device (PCD) with electromagnetic communication capability has a GPS receiver and a display. The PCD requests maps and location tagged data from data providers and other for display on the PCD. The data providers respond to requests by using searching and sorting schemes to interrogate data bases and then automatically transmitting data responsive to the requests to the requesting PCD.

Claims

1. A locating and map downloading system comprising:

a personal digital communicator comprising;

a display for the display of may information and selectable waypoints, the selectable waypoints being displayed with respect to the map information;

a receiver for receiving GPS signals;

means for processing the GPS signals whereby location of the personal digital communicator may be determined;

a first transceiver;

a first modem coupled to the transceiver and to a first digital processor;

communicator input means for formatting a request for map information, and for selecting a waypoint, the communicator input means coupled to the first digital processor;

the first digital processor being programmed to cause display of may information and selectable waypoints by the display, and to cause transmission via the first modem and the first transceiver of requests for map information and requests for additional data associated with a selected waypoint; and

a map storage and transmitting device comprising a second transceiver, a second modem coupled to the second transceiver and a second digital processor, memory accessible by the second digital processor for storing map information, waypoints, and additional data associated with the waypoints, the second digital processor being programmed to determine which map information stored in the memory is responsive to the request for map information and to cause transmission via the second modem and the second transceiver of map information responsive to the request.

The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first processor transmits via the first modem and the first transceiver a request for map information pertaining to the communicator location and receives via the first transceiver and the first modem map information responsive to the request.

3. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first processor transmits via the first modem and the first transceiver a request for map information pertaining to a location other than the communicator location.

4. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor is further programmed to cause transmission via the first modem and the first transceiver further data associated with a location to the map storage and transmittal device and the second processor stores the further data associated with the location in the map storage and transmittal device memory.

5. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor determines a heading of direction of the personal digital communicator.

6. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to determine the direction of North.

7. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first and second transceivers are transceivers for communicating in a cellular phone network.

8. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first and second transceivers are transceivers for radio communications.

9. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first and second transceivers are transceivers for telephonic communications.

10. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first and second transceivers are transceivers for communicating in a satellite communications network.

11. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor stores communicator configuration information in the communicator memory and is programmed to configure the personal digital communicator according to the configuration information.

12. The locating and map downloading system of claim 11 wherein the communicator configuration information includes at least one personal identification number and the first digital processor is programmed to configure the personal digital communicator differently in response to different personal identification numbers.

13. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the communicator input means for formatting requests for map information uses selection criteria.

14. The locating and map downloading system of claim 13 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to determine if the communicator memory contains map information for a geographic area within a selected radius of the personal digital communicator and to cause transmission via the first modem and the first transceiver a request for map information for a geographic area within a selected radius of the personal digital communicator if the communicator memory does not contain such map information.

15. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to determine a route to a selected waypoint.

16. The locating and map downloading system of claim 15 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to determine a route to a number of sequentially selected waypoints.

17. The locating and map downloading system of claim 16 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to modify the route to a number of sequentially selected waypoints in response to the selection of a further waypoint.

18. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to cause display of different waypoints on the display based on aspects of the additional data.

19. The locating and map downloading system of claim 18 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to cause the display to display the additional data associated with a selected waypoint when the waypoint is selected.

20. The locating and map downloading system of claim 19 wherein the additional data comprises a video data file.

21. The locating and map downloading system of claim 19 wherein the additional data comprises an audio data file.

22. The locating and map downloading system of claim 1 wherein the Personal digital communicator further comprises communicator memory, operatively coupled to the first digital processor, for storing map information and additional data.

23. The locating and map downloading system of claim 22 wherein the map storage and transmitting device comprises a second personal digital communicator.

24. The locating and map downloading system of claim 22 further comprising a weather information gathering device for providing weather information to the first digital processor.

25. The locating and map downloading system of claim 24 wherein the first digital processor is programmed to automatically transmit via the first modem and first transceiver the weather information.

26. A personal digital communicator device comprising:

a GPS receiver for receiving GPS signals;

a processor to determine the device location based on the GPS signals, the processor being programmed to format requests for specified data regarding unspecified locations within a geographic area from a data provider and to process responsive data to the requests received by a communications means, the responsive data including geographic location data;

the communication means providing a means for requesting and receiving map information from digital map storage devices; and

a display for displaying external map information received from digital map storage devices and the device location.

27. The personal digital communicator device of claim 26 wherein the processor determines a heading of direction of the device.

28. The personal digital communicator device of claim 26 wherein the processor determines the direction of north.

29. The personal digital communicator device of claim 26 further comprising a weather information gathering device providing weather information to the processor.

30. The personal digital communicator device of claim 26 wherein the communication means provides a means for providing the personal digital communicator device location to other personal digital communicator devices and a means for receiving locations of the other personal digital communicators.

31. The personal digital communication device of claim 30 wherein the display displays the other device locations with respect to the external map information.

32. The personal digital communicator device of claim 26 wherein the display displays a symbol indicative of the geographic location of the responsive data with respect to the external map information.

33. The personal digital communicator device of claim 32 further comprising computer memory accessible by the processor.

34. The personal digital communicator device of claim 33 wherein the computer memory stores internal map information in the computer memory.

35. The personal digital communicator device of claim 34 wherein the display displays a symbol indicative of the geographical location of the responsive data with respect to the internal map information.

36. The personal digital communicator device of claim 35 further comprising a keyboard input means for providing data to the processor.

37. The personal digital communicator device of claim 36 wherein the indicative symbol is selectable using the keyboard input means and the display displays the responsive data when the indicative symbol is selected.

38. The personal digital communicator device of claim 36 wherein the indicative symbol is selectable using the keyboard input means and the processor formats a request for data regarding the geographical location indicated by the indicative symbol when the indicative symbol is selected.

39. The personal digital communicator device of claim 36 wherein an entered personal identification number is entered using the keyboard means, at least one stored personal identification number is stored in the computer memory, the processor compares the entered personal identification number and the at least one stored personal identification number and disables device operation for a period of time if the compared personal identification numbers are not identical.

40. The personal digital communicator device of claim 39 wherein a plurality of personal identification numbers are stored in the computer memory and the displayed map information is displayed in different predefined formats when different personal identification numbers are entered.

41. A locating and map downloading system comprising:

a personal digital communicator comprising;

means for determining a location of the personal digital communicator;

means for requesting map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information from a map storage and transmission device;

means for receiving the map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information from the map storage and transmission device;

means for storing the map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information;

means for displaying the map information and markers indicating availability of additional data associated with specific locations within the map information and the location of the personal digital communicator with respect to the map information;

means for selecting a one of the markers;

means for determining if additional information associated with a specific location identified by a marker is stored by the means for storing the map information and the additional data; and

means for requesting further additional data associated with the specific location identified by the marker from the map storage and transmission device; and

the map storage and transmission device comprising;

means for receiving the request for map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information and for receiving the request for further additional data; and

means for processing the request for map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information and for processing the request for further additional data; and

means for transmitting the map information and additional data associated with specific locations within the map information and for transmitting the further additional data.

42. A personal digital communicator comprising:

a processor;

a memory accessible by the processor;

a display coupled to the processor, the display displaying map information and a position of the personal digital communicator with respect to the map information, the map information including waypoints, as commanded by the processor;

input means for formatting requests for map information and for selecting waypoints;

a GPS receiver coupled to the processor, the processor being programmed to process information received by the GPS receiver to determine therefrom the position of the personal digital communicator;

a transceiver coupled to the processor;

the processor being programmed to request map information using the transceiver from a map storage and transmitting device, to process map information received from the map storage and transmitting device, to determine the availability of additional stored data for waypoints in the memory upon selection of a one of the waypoints by the input means, and to request additional stored data using the transceiver from the map storage and transmitting device upon selection of the one of the waypoints if the additional stored data is not available in the memory.
