- a) a personal computer having an accessible memory storage medium;
b) an MRI magnet which directly interfaces with said personal computer;
c) means for controlling and managing input and output information to and from said MRI magnet in real time;
d) a radio frequency or "RF" transceiver for use with said MRI magnet, said RF transceiver being directly interfaced with said personal computer;
e) an image display unit interfaced with said personal computer for displaying scan data received from said RF transceiver; and
f) a patient database interfaced with said personal computer for retrieving and recording patient data.

Abstract
A personal computer or "PC" based software control system for a magnetic resonance imaging or "MRI" scanner. The software control system manages various types of MRI scanners without modification of the software control system. The control system manages the scanning process through a device driver interface which abstracts the particulars of the specific hardware used to interface to the magnetic, radio frequency, image display, image acquisition, patient handling and scan control subsystems.
