Abstract

A method of communicating data with a plurality of electronic circuit breakers operatively connected in a power distribution system is disclosed and claimed herein. Each circuit breaker includes a communication port coupled to a network. The method comprises coupling a communication terminal, having a processing circuit and a first communication port coupled to the processing circuit, to the network via the first communication port; operating a first communication protocol for automatically addressing individual ones of the circuit breakers and for controlling message traffic on the network; and transmitting and receiving data on the network under control of the first communication protocol relating to the monitoring and control of the individually addressable ones of the plurality of electronic circuit breakers coupled to the network. In another aspect, the method includes coupling a second communication port of the communication terminal via a communication link to a controller remote from the network and operating a second communication protocol for controlling message traffic relating to monitoring and control of the plurality of electronic circuit breakers between the controller and the communication terminal via the communication link.

Claims

1. A method of communicating data with a plurality of electronic circuit breakers opratively connected in a power distribution system, each having a communication port coupled to a network, comprising steps of:

coupling a communication terminal, having a processing circuit and first and second communication ports coupled to the processing circuit, to the network via the first communication port;

operating a first communication protocol for automatically addressing individual ones of the circuit breakers and for controlling message traffic on the network coupling the first communication port of the communication terminal to the respective communication ports of the plurality of electronic circuit breakers; and

transmitting and receiving data on the network under control of the first communication protocol and relating to the monitoring and control of the individually addressable ones of the plurality of electronic circuit breakers coupled to the network.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of coupling a communication terminal to the network comprises the steps of:

coupling the second communication port of the communication terminal via a communication link to a controller remote from the network; and

operating a second communication protocol for controlling message traffic associated with monitoring and control of the plurality of electronic circuit breakers between the controller and the communication terminal via the communication link.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of operating a first communication protocol comprises the steps of:

formatting a message for transferring serial data;

synchronizing transmission of the serial data with the operation of the processing circuit;

determining addresses for each circuit breaker; and

controlling message traffic.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the step of determining addresses comprises the steps of:

selecting, in each circuit breaker, a binary circuit breaker address at random from a predefined group;

transmitting the address on the network from the communication terminal;

validating the circuit breaker address when a match occurs; and

selecting, in a circuit breaker address conflict, another circuit breaker address at random from the predefined group.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the step of controlling message traffic comprises the steps of:

arbitrating conflicts among circuit breakers having the same address by reselecting a circuit breaker address for a circuit breaker experiencing a conflict with another circuit breaker on the network; and

reprogramming a predetermined delay time before a new transmission is initiated.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of arbitrating comprises the step of:

reselecting the address for the affected circuit breaker at random from a predefined group of addresses.

7. The method of claim 5, where the step of reprogramming a delay time comprises the step of:

reselecting the delay time for the affected circuit breaker at random from a predefined group of delay times.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of operating a first communication protocol comprises the steps of:

selecting, in each circuit breaker, a binary circuit breaker address at random from a predefined group;

transmitting the address on the network from the communication terminal;

validating the circuit breaker address when a match occurs; and

selecting, in a circuit breaker having an address conflict, another circuit breaker address at random from the predefined group.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting and receiving data comprises the steps of:

receiving data logging information from the circuit breakers; and

storing the data logging information for use in analysis and remote control operations.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the step of storing comprises the steps of:

storing the data logging information in non-volatile memory; and

time-stamping the data logging information stored in the non-volatile memory.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting and receiving data comprises the steps of:

transmitting control information to the circuit breakers related to branch control actions, reconfiguration of individual circuit breakers, revisions to circuit breaker trip profiles and emergency trip conditions.

12. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of operating a second communication protocol comprises the steps of:

receiving control information from the controller remote from the network related to branch control actions, reconfiguration of individual circuit breakers, revisions to circuit breaker trip profiles and emergency trip conditions; and

storing the control information for transmission to affected circuit breakers according to the first communication protocol.

13. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of operating a second communication protocol comprises the steps of:

transmitting control information related to emergency conditions in the circuit breakers to the controller remote from the network.

14. The method claim 1, comprising the steps of:

providing a third communication port for transmitting diagnostic information from the communication terminal to an external terminal.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of providing comprises the steps of:

enabling the third communication port to output the diagnostic information to the external terminal; and

outputting the diagnostic information.

16. The method of claim 1, comprising the steps of:

providing first and second annunciators for communicating selectively status information about the circuit breakers and the communication terminal.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of providing comprises the step of:

providing a visible display for indicating the status information.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the step of providing comprises the step of:

providing an audible annunciator for indicating the status information.

19. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of operating a second communication protocol comprises the steps of:

formatting a message for transferring serial data;

synchronizing transmission of the serial data with the operation of the processing circuit;

determining addresses for each circuit breaker; and

controlling message traffic.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the step of determining addresses comprises the steps of:

selecting, in each circuit breaker, a binary circuit breaker address at random from a predefined group;

transmitting the address on the network from the communication terminal;

validating the circuit breaker address when a match occurs; and

selecting, in a circuit breaker having an address conflict, another circuit breaker address at random from the predefined group.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the step of controlling message traffic comprises the steps of:

arbitrating conflicts among circuit breakers having the same address by reselecting a circuit breaker address for a circuit breaker experiencing a conflict with another circuit breaker on the network; and

reprogramming a predetermined delay time before a new transmission is initiated.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of arbitrating comprises the step of:

reselecting the address for the affected circuit breaker at random from a predefined group of addresses.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of reprogramming a delay time comprises the step of:

reselecting the delay time for the affected circuit breaker at random from a predefined group of delay times.

24. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of operating a second communication protocol comprises the steps of:

selecting, in each circuit breaker, a binary circuit breaker address at random from a predefined group;

transmitting the address on the network from the communication terminal;

validating the circuit breaker address when a match occurs; and

selecting, in a circuit breaker having an address conflict, another circuit breaker address at random from the predefined group.
