1. A system for electro-optically reading bar code symbols, comprising:
- a) a housing movable relative to a symbol to be read during an aiming mode of operation;
b) a reader in the housing, including a light source for directing a light beam toward the symbol for reflection therefrom, a light sensor having a field of view and operative for detecting light reflected from the symbol and for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light, and a scanner for scanning at least one of the light beam and the field of view during a scanning mode of operation; and
c) a trigger switch on the housing, said trigger switch being manually displaceable by a user from a first position to a second position for activating the reader during the aiming mode to direct the light beam out of the housing onto the symbol to enable the user to move the housing and position the light beam on the symbol, said trigger switch being releasable from the second position and automatically returnable to the first position for activating the reader to initiate the scanning mode.

Abstract
A system for reading indicia such as bar code symbols having a scanner for generating a scanning light beam directed toward a symbol to be read. A trigger manually displaceable from a first position to a second position produces a first light beam for aiming or positioning the reader. The trigger is automatically returnable, or held in the second position, or manually displaceable from the second position to the first position for initiating a scanning beam pattern for reading the symbol. A detector receives the reflected light from the symbol and produces electrical signals corresponding to data represented by the symbol.
