Floating bearing knee joint prosthesis with a fixed tibial post
First Claim
1. A knee joint prosthesis for replacing the articulating knee portion of a femur and a tibia, said knee joint prosthesis comprising:
- a femoral component having an engagement member, a first femoral bearing surface and a second femoral bearing surface;
a tibial component having a tibial bearing surface;
a bearing member having a first bearing surface operable to articulate with said first femoral bearing surface, a second bearing surface operable to articulate with said second femoral bearing surface, and a third bearing surface operable to articulate with said tibial bearing surface;
a first removable guide post extending from said tibial component, said first removable guide post operable to be engaged by said engagement member of said femoral component, said first removable guide post includes a first guide portion having a first shape and a second guide portion having a second shape, said first shape being different from said second shape, said first guide portion operable to control movement of said femoral component and said second guide portion operable to control movement of said bearing member; and
a second removable guide post, wherein upon replacing said first removable guide post with said second removable guide post, said knee joint prosthesis is converted from a first type knee joint prosthesis to a second type knee joint prosthesis with each said prosthesis having a different type of constraint.

Abstract
The invention relates to a floating bearing knee joint prosthesis having a fixed tibial post used for replacing the articulating knee portion of a femur and a tibia. The floating bearing knee joint prosthesis includes a femoral component, a tibial component, a bearing member and a guide post. The femoral component includes an engagement member, a first femoral bearing surface and a second femoral bearing surface. The tibial component includes a tibial bearing surface. The bearing member includes a first bearing surface which is operable to articulate with the first femoral bearing surface, a second bearing surface which is operable to articulate with the second femoral bearing surface and a third bearing surface which is operable to articulate with the tibial bearing surface. The guide post extends from the tibial component and is operable to be engaged by the engagement member of the femoral component such that upon engagement, the femoral component forces the bearing member to move posteriorly relative to the tibial component.

11. A knee joint prosthesis for replacing the articulating knee portion of a femur and a tibia, said knee joint prosthesis comprising:
-
a femoral component having at least one femoral bearing surface; a tibial component having at least one tibial bearing surface; a bearing member having a first bearing surface operable to articulate with said at least one femoral bearing surface and a second bearing surface operable to articulate with said at least one tibial bearing surface; a first removable guide post operable to be removably coupled to said tibial component, said first removable guide post operable to be engaged by said femoral component; and a second removable guide post operable to be removably coupled to said tibial component, said second removable guide post operable to be engaged by said femoral component, wherein upon selection of one of said first and second removable guide posts changes the type of constraint exhibited by the knee joint prosthesis whereby upon engagement of said femoral component with one of said first and second removable guide posts, said femoral component controls at least a portion of the movement of said bearing member relative to said tibial component. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16)
