Blood processing chamber counter-balanced with blood-free liquid
First Claim
1. A blood processing system comprisinga rotating element operated to rotate about an axis, and a processing chamber that extends circumferentially about the axis on the rotating element for common rotation with the rotating element, the processing chamber including a first compartment containing blood for centrifugal separation into components, the processing chamber also including a second compartment circumferentially spaced from the first compartment about the axis and containing a liquid free of blood which circumferentially counter-balances the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element.

Abstract
Blood processing systems and methods rotate a processing chamber on a rotating element. The processing chamber includes a first compartment and a second compartment. Blood is conveyed into the first compartment for centrifugal separation into components. A liquid free of blood occupies the second compartment to counter-balance the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element. In one embodiment, the second compartment is served by a single fluid flow access. Prior to use, the single access is coupled to tubing, through which a vacuum is drawn to remove air from the second compartment. While the vacuum exists, communication is opened between the tubing and a source of liquid. The vacuum draws the liquid into the second compartment through the single access, thereby priming the second compartment for use.

2. A blood processing system comprising
a rotating element having a circumference and operated to rotate about an axis, and a processing chamber that extends circumferentially about the axis on the rotating element for common rotation with the rotating element, the processing chamber including a first compartment containing blood for centrifugal separation into components, the first compartment occupying less than the entire circumference of the rotating element, the processing chamber also including a second compartment circumferentially spaced from the first compartment about the axis and containing a liquid free of blood which circumferentially counter-balances the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element.

6. A blood processing system comprising
a rotating element, a processing chamber made to be secured to the rotating element for common rotation with the rotating element the processing chamber including a first compartment having an inlet port for conveying blood into the first compartment for centrifugal separation into components and an outlet port for conveying a separated component from the first compartment, the processing chamber also including a second compartment including a single fluid flow access for conveying liquid into the second compartment to counter-balance the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element, tubing communicating with the single access, a pump element in the tubing, and a controller coupled to the pump element operative in a first mode to operate the pump element to draw a vacuum in second compartment, the pump element being operative in a second mode to opening communication between the tubing and a source of liquid while the vacuum exists in the second compartment, whereby the vacuum draws liquid into the second compartment to prime the second compartment and counter-balance the first compartment.

8. A blood processing method comprising the steps of
rotating a processing chamber on a rotating element about an axis, the processing chamber including a first compartment and a second compartment circumferentially spaced from the first compartment, conveying blood into the first compartment for centrifugal separation into components, and filling the second compartment with a liquid free of blood to circumferentially counter-balance the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element.
