1. An electrostatic discharge event detector comprising:
- a substrate;
at least one conductor patterned from a metal layer deposited on the substrate, the conductor acting as an antenna for receiving a voltage produced by an electro-static discharge;
a magneto-optic element formed from a film deposited on the substrate and patterned such that the magneto-optic element is formed next to the conductor, the magneto-optic element having a magnetized state and being capable of switching to a demagnetized state in the presence of a magnetic field having a field strength that exceeds a predetermined field strength at the location of the magneto-optic element;
whereby the magneto-optic element switches from the magnetized state to the demagnetized state when the conductor receives a voltage from an electrostatic discharge that induces a current to flow through the conductor sufficient to generate a magnetic field around the conductor that exceeds the predetermined field strength of the magneto-optic element.

Abstract
A reusable miniaturized detector that utilizes magneto-optic elements to detect the occurrence of an electrostatic discharge during the manufacture or handling of electrostatic discharge sensitive electronic components and circuit boards. The device may also be used to determine the polarity and magnitude of the electrostatic discharge. The device may be manually or automatically read, either by removing the device from the environment being monitored or continuously monitoring in situ. The device can also be configured to provide protection to some electrostatic discharge events which could damage sensitive components being monitored.

5. A method for detecting an electrostatic discharge using a sensor including a magneto-optic element having a magnetized state and a demagnetized state and capable of changing from the magnetized state to the demagnetized state in response to an electromagnetic field having a field strength exceeding a predetermined field strength, the magneto-optic element mounted on a substrate adjacent to a conductor formed on the substrate, the method comprising:
-
receiving a voltage from an electrostatic discharge having an unknown magnitude using the conductor, the received voltage inducing a current in the conductor and generating an electromagnetic field around the conductor having a field strength representative of the magnitude of the electrostatic discharge;
determining whether the magnitude of the electrostatic discharge exceeds a predetermined magnitude by detecting whether the state of the magneto-optic element has changed from a magnetized state to a demagnetized state in response to the generated electromagnetic field.

-
placing the sensor at a location where an electrostatic discharge may occur;
detecting an electrostatic discharge in a general area of the location of the sensor by sensing when a current is induced in the conductor by the electrostatic discharge, the induced current generating an electromagnetic field around the conductor having a field strength representative of the magnitude of the electrostatic discharge;
determining whether the magnitude of the electrostatic discharge exceeds a predetermined magnitude by determining whether the state of the magneto-optic element has changed from the magnetized state to the demagnetized state.
