Abstract

A progammable power supply for providing a regulated DC output power is disclosed. The power supply provides the output power to any one of a plurality of electronic devices adapted for receiving the output power at an operational voltage or an operational current. The power supply receives a programming signal to maintain the output power at the operational voltage or operational current associated with a particular selected electronic device. Accordingly, by varying the programming signal, the power supply can be programmed to provide output power to any one of several electronic devices having differing input power requirements.

Claims

1. A power supply which is programmable for providing DC power to a selected one of a plurality of electronic appliances, each of the plurality of electronic appliances being adapted for receiving DC power to meet an input power requirement associated with the electronic appliance of at least one of an input current and an input voltage, the power supply comprising:

an input circuit for receiving input power from a power source;

an output circuit adapted for coupling to the selected electronic appliance at an output connection terminal for transmitting power to the selected electronic appliance; and

a power conversion circuit for providing output power at the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance in response to a detection of a programming signal received at the output connection terminal to substantially meet the input power requirement associated with the selected appliance.

2. The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power source is an AC power source and the input circuit includes an input transformer and a rectifier circuit.

3. The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power source is a DC power source and the input circuit includes an inductor circuit.

The power supply of claim 1, wherein the output connection terminal includes a plurality of conductors adapted for coupling to a connector coupled to the electronic appliance, at least two of the conductors being coupled by a programming resistance, and wherein the programming signal is one of a programming voltage across the programming resistance and a programming current through the programming resistance.

The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power conversion circuit maintains the output power at about the input current or input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected appliance in response to a signal received at the output connection terminal from an active device.

The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power conversion circuit includes a transformer having a core with a magnetic summing node, a plurality of primary coils, each of the primary coils transmitting a magnetic flux arriving at the magnetic summing node at a phase, and wherein the power supply further includes a control circuit for controlling the relative phases of the magnetic fluxes at the summing node in response to the programming signal to maintain output power at about the current or the voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected appliance.

The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power conversion circuit includes a transformer with a primary coil and a secondary coil, the power supply further including a control circuit for pulse width modulating a current through the primary coil in response to the programming signal to maintain the output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected appliance.

The power supply of claim 1, wherein the plurality of electronic appliances includes at least two of a portable telephone, a portable computer, a game system and a video device, and wherein the power conversion circuit provides the output power at a current which substantially meets an input current requirement of the selected electronic appliance in response to the programming signal.

9. The power supply of claim 1, wherein the power conversion circuit is capable of providing the output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of either a portable telephone or a portable computer in response to the programming signal.

10. A method for providing power to a selected one of a plurality of electronic applicances, each of the plurality of electronic appliances being adapted to receive input power to substantially meet an input power requirement associated with the electronic appliance of at least one of an input current and an input voltage, the method comprising:

receiving input power from a power source;

detecting a power programming signal at a connector coupled to the selected electronic appliance;

converting the input power into output power having one of the input current and the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance in response to the power programming signal; and

transmitting the output power to the selected electronic appliance through the connector to substantially meet the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

11. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising receiving the input power from an AC power source.

12. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising receiving the input power from a DC power source.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of detecting the programming signals further includes detecting a programming resistance coupled between a pair of conductors of the connector, the programming resistance being representative of the at least one of the input voltage and the input current of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

14. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising receiving the programming signal at the connector from an active device.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of converting the input power further includes controlling a phase of a magnetic flux arriving at a magnetic summing node transmitted by each of a plurality of primary coils of a transformer in response to the programming signal to maintain output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

16. The method of claim 10, the method further including pulse width modulating a current through a primary coil of a transformer, the transformer having a primary coil and a secondary coil, in response to the programming signal to maintain the output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the plurality of electronic appliances includes at least two of a portable telephone, a portable computer, a game system and a video device and the method further includes converting the input power into output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of the selected electronic appliance.

18. The method of claim 10, the method further including converting the input power into output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of either a portable telephone or a portable computer in response to the power programming signal.

19. A power supply for providing power to selected one of a plurality of electronic appliances, each of the plurality of electronic appliances being adapted to receive input power to substantially meet an input power requirement associated with the electronic appliance of at least one of an input current and an input voltage, the power supply comprising:

means for receiving input power from a power source;

means for detecting a power programming signal at a connector coupled to the selected electronic appliance;

means for converting the input power into output power having one of the input current and the input voltage in response to the programming signal; and

means for transmitting the output power to the selected electronic appliance through the connector to substantially meet the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

20. The power supply of claim 19, the power supply further comprising means for receiving the input power from an AC power source.

21. The power supply of claim 19, the power supply further comprising means for receiving the input power from a DC power source.

22. The power supply of claim 19, wherein the means for detecting the programming signals further includes means for detecting a programming resistance coupled between a pair of conductors of the connector, the programming resistance being representative of the at least one of the input voltage and the input current of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

23. The power supply of claim 19, the power supply further comprising means for receiving the programming signal at the connector from an active device.

24. The power supply of claim 19, wherein the means for converting the input power further includes means for controlling a phase of a magnetic flux arriving at a magnetic summing node by each of a plurality of primary coils of a transformer in response to the programming signal to maintain output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

25. The power supply of claim 19, the power supply further including means for pulse width modulating a current through a primary coil of a transformer, the transformer having a primary coil and a secondary coil, in response to the programming signal to maintain the output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associateid with the selected electronic appliance.

26. The power supply of claim 19, wherein the plurality of electronic appliances includes at least two of a portable telephone, a portable computer, a game system and a video device and the power supply further includes means for converting the input power into output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of the selected electronic appliance.

27. The power supply of claim 19, the power supply further including means for converting the input power into output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of either a portable telephone or a portable computer in response to the power programming signal.

28. A system of providing power to portable electronic devices, the system comprising:

an electronic appliance selected from a plurality of electronic appliances, each of the plurality of electronic appliances being adapted for receiving power at an input power requirement associated with the electronic appliance of at least one of an input current and an input voltage;

a power supply adapted for receiving input power from a power source for providing DC power to a DC input of the selected electronic appliance, the power supply including an input circuit for receiving input power from a power source, an output connection terminal adapted for coupling to the DC input of selected electronic appliance, an output circuit for transmitting output power to the output connection terminal, and a power conversion circuit for converting power received from a power source into the output power, the output power being at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance in response to a detection of a programning signal received at the output connection terminal; and

a connector for coupling the DC input of the selected electronic appliance to the output connection terminal for transmitting power from the power supply to the selected electronic appliance, the connector having at least one conductor adapted for mating with a conductor of the output connection terminal for transmitting the programming signal to the power supply.

29. The system of claim 28, the system frither comprising a plurality of connectors, each connector corresponding with one of the plurality of electronic appliances, wherein each of the connectors corresponding with a particular electronic appliance is adapted for providing an associated programming signal to the output connection terminal of the power supply to maintain the output power of the power supply at about the input current or input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the particular electronic appliance.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein the input power source is an AC power source and the input circuit includes an input transformer and a rectifier circuit.

31. The system of claim 28, wherein the input power source is a DC power source and the input circuit includes an inductor circuit.

32. The system of claim 28, wherein the output connection terminal includes a plurality of conductors adapted for coupling to the connector coupled to the electronic appliance, at least two of-the conductors being coupled by a programming resistance, and wherein the programming signal is one of a programming voltage across the programming resistance and a programming current through the programming resistance.

33. The system of claim 28, wherein the power supply receives the programming signal from an active device.

34. The system of claim 28, wherein the power conversion circuit includes a transformer having a core with a magnetic summing node, a plurality of primary coils, each of the primary coils transmitting a magnetic flux to the magnetic summing node at a phase, and wherein the power supply further includes a control circuit for controlling the relative phases of the magnetic fluxes at the summing node in response to the programming signal to maintain output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement of the selected electronic appliance.

35. The system of claim 28, wherein the power conversion circuit includes a transformer with a primary coil and a secondary coil, the power supply farther including a control circuit for pulse width modulating a current through the primary coil in response to the programming signal to maintain the output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

36. The system of claim 28, wherein the plurality of electronic appliances includes at least two of a portable telephone, a portable computer, a game system and a video device, and wherein the power conversion circuit provides the output power at a current which substantially meets an input current requirement of the selected electronic appliance in response to the programming signal.

37. The system of claim 28, wherein the power conversion circuit is capable of providing the output power to substantially meet an input current requirement of either a portable telephone or a portable computer in response to the programming signal.

38. A method of controlling a power supply to provide output power, the method comprising:

selecting an electronic appliance from among a plurality of electronic appliances, each of the electronic appliances being adapted to receive input power at an input power requirement associated with the electronic appliance of at least one of an input current and an input voltage;

selecting one of a plurality of connectors for transmitting power from the power supply to the selected electronic appliance, each of the plurality of connectors being associated with one of the plurality of electronic appliances, the selected connector being associated with the selected electronic appliance;

coupling the selected connector between a power output connection terminal of the power supply and a power input connection terminal of the selected electronic appliance; and

transmitting a programming signal from the selected connector to the output connection terminal of the power supply to control the power supply to transmit output power to the selected portable appliance at about the input current or input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected appliance.

39. The method of claim 38, the method further comprising providing an AC power source to the power supply.

40. The method of claim 38, the method fuirther comprising providing a DC power source to the power supply.

41. The method of claim 38, wherein the power output terminal includes a plurality of conductors adapted for coupling to a plurality of conductors of the selected connector and at least two of the conductors of the selected connector are coupled by a programming resistance, the method further comprising detecting one of a programming voltage across the programming resistance and a programming current through the programming resistance.

42. The method of claim 38, the method further comprising transmitting the programming signal from an active device through the selected connector to the power supply.

43. The method of claim 38, wherein the power supply includes a transformer having a core with a magnetic summing node, a plurality of primary coils, each of the primary coils transmitting a magnetic flux to the magnetic summing node at a phase, the method further comprising controlling the relative phases of the magnetic fluxes arriving at the summing node in response to the programming signal to maintain output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

44. The method of claim 38, wherein the power supply includes a transformer with a primary coil and a secondary coil, the method further comprising pulse width modulating a current through the primary coil in response to the programming signal to maintain the output power at about the input current or the input voltage of the input power requirement associated with the selected electronic appliance.

45. The method of claim 38, the method further including:

selecting an electronic appliance from among a portable computer, a portable telephone, a game system and a video device; and

transmitting the programming signal from the selected connector to the output connection terminal of the power supply to control the power supply to transmit power to substantially meet an input current requirement of the selected appliance.

46. The method of claim 38, the method further including:

selecting one of a portable computer and a portable telephone; and

selectively transmitting the programming signal from the selected connector to the output connection terminal of the power supply to control the power supply to transmit power to substantially meet an input current requirement of either the portable computer or the portable telephone.
