Abstract

A stent system and method for use in the prostate gland. The stent is made of a shape memory alloy such as nitinol, and has a low temperature martensite state, with a martensite transition temperature below body temperature, and a high temperature austenite state, with an austenite transition temperature at or above body temperature, and a memorized shape in the high temperature austenite state which is a helical coil of diameter large enough to hold the prostatic urethra open. The stent is used to heat the prostate and is left in the prostatic urethra while the prostate heals. After the prostate is substantially healed, the stent is cooled to its martensite state and is easily removed from the urethra.

Claims

1. A method of treating a prostate gland by inserting a stent within the prostatic urethra of a patient, said method comprising:

providing a metallic stent sized and dimensioned to fit within the prostatic urethra of a patient;

providing a stent delivery catheter suitable for insertion into the prostatic urethra;

mounting the stent on the stent delivery catheter, inserting the stent delivery catheter with the stent mounted thereon into the prostatic urethra, and placing the stent within the urethra;

heating the prostate gland to a temperature high enough to cause thermal damage to the prostate gland;

allowing the prostate gland to heal after it is thermally damaged, and leaving the stent in the prostatic urethra while the prostate gland is healing;

removing the stent from the prostatic urethra when the prostate gland has substantially healed from the thermal damage.

2. A method of treating a prostate gland by inserting a stent in the prostatic urethra of a patient, said method comprising:

providing a stent sized and dimensioned to fit within the prostatic urethra of a patient, said stent comprised of shape memory material with a low temperature state in which the stent is easily deformable and a high temperature state in which the stent exhibits shape memory and reverts to a memorized shape of a helical coil stent, said high temperature state occurring when the stent is heated above the shape memory transition temperature characteristic of the metal, and said low temperature state occurring when the stent is cooled to below a low temperature transition temperature characteristic of the metal;

providing a stent delivery catheter suitable for insertion into the prostatic urethra;

mounting the stent on the stent delivery catheter, inserting the stent into the prostatic urethra while it is in its easily deformable low temperature state;

placing the stent within the urethra by heating the stent to its shape memory transition temperature and allowing the stent to revert to its memorized shape of a helical coil stent;

heating the prostate gland to a temperature high enough to cause thermal damage to the prostate gland;

allowing the prostate gland to heal after it is thermally damaged, and leaving the stent in the prostatic urethra while the prostate gland is healing;

cooling the stent to its easily deformable low temperature state and removing the stent from the prostatic urethra.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the shape memory material high temperature state occurs upon heating to a temperature above body temperature.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the shape memory material high temperature state occurs upon heating to a temperature at about body temperature.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the shape memory material high temperature state occurs upon heating to a temperature below body temperature.
