1. A method for controlling intravascular blood flow and blood oxygen delivery to tissues of a body of a human or animal subject, comprising:

  • intravenously administering an effective amount of an oxygen containing hemoglobin blood substitute to said subject; and

    administering to said subject an effective amount of a cyclic guanosine monophosphate-generating compound for a time and under conditions effective to alter blood flow and oxygen to said tissues a hemoglobin blood substitute to said subject; and

    administering to said subject a cyclic guanosine monophosphate-generating compound.
