Abstract

A lancet device used to pierce a user'"'"'s skin and including a lancet with a body portion and a piercing tip, a primary housing, a cover assembly with a piercing opening and structured to be matingly coupled with the primary housing to define an interior chamber, and a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed within the interior chamber and structured and disposed to hold the lancet during its driven movement between a cocked orientation, a piercing orientation and a fired orientation. The lancet device further includes a retention member including a pair of elongate fingers, and an engagement hub disposed in the interior chamber and structured to be cooperatively engaged by inwardly depending protrusions on the elongate fingers when the lancet receiving assembly is in the cocked orientation so as to maintain the lancet receiving assembly in the cocked orientation until the retention member is affirmatively released from its cooperative engagement with the engagement hub by an exteriorly actuatable actuation assembly which urges the elongate fingers out of their engagement with cooperative structure on the engagement hub. Moreover, a removable extension segment is preferably provided so as to increase an overall length of the lancet device as desired by a user.

Claims

1. A lancet device comprising:

a lancet, said lancet including a piercing tip,

a primary housing,

a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed at least partially within said primary housing and structured and disposed to at least temporarily hold said lancet,

said lancet receiving assembly being moveable between a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, with movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

a retention member,

an engagement hub, said engagement hub structured to be cooperatively engaged with said retention member at least upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation so as to maintain said lancet receiving assembly in said cocked orientation until said retention member is affirmatively released from said cooperative engagement therewith,

an actuation assembly structured and disposed to release said retention member from said cooperative engagement with said engagement hub,

said retention member including at least one finger, said finger including a depending protrusion structured to engage cooperative structure on said engagement hub when said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said cocked orientation, and

said actuation assembly being structured to at least temporarily urge said finger out of said engagement with said cooperative structure on said engagement hub,

a removable extension segment structured to selectively and operatively extend a length of the lancet device so as to increase a manipulability thereof.

2. A lancet device as recited in claim 1 wherein said extension segment is structured to be operatively coupled with said lancet receiving assembly and is movable therewith between said cocked orientation and said fired orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 2 wherein said extension segment includes a moveable element, said moveable element including a distal end and a proximal end, said distal end structured to be coupled with said lancet receiving assembly and said proximal end structured to at least temporarily hold said lancet.

4. A lancet device as recited in claim 3 wherein said extension segment further includes an extension housing structured to be coupled with said primary housing, said extension housing structured to movably contain said moveable element.

A lancet device as recited in claim 4 further comprising a cover assembly structured to be matingly coupled with said primary housing so as to define an interior chamber, said cover including a piercing opening wherethrough said piercing tip of said lancet at least temporarily extends during movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 5 wherein said extension housing is further structured to receive said cover assembly operably coupled thereto and said moveable element is structured to at least temporarily extend said piercing tip of said lancet through said piercing opening of said cover assembly during movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation.

7. A lancet device as recited in claim 4 wherein said extension segment further includes a restriction assembly structured to maintain said moveable element movably coupled to said extension housing.

A lancet device as recited in claim 1 further comprising a cover assembly structured to be matingly coupled with said primary housing so as to define an interior chamber, said cover including a piercing opening wherethrough said piercing tip of said lancet at least temporarily extends during movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation.

9. A lancet device as recited in claim 1 wherein said retention member includes two of said fingers disposed in opposite, confronting relation with one another.

A lancet device as recited in claim 1 wherein said finger is coupled to said lancet receiving assembly and said engagement hub protrudes inwardly from a base of said primary housing and includes a generally enlarged head behind which said depending protrusion of said finger is cooperatively disposed in order to retain said lancet receiving assembly in said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 10 further including a biasing element cooperatively disposed with said lancet receiving assembly so as to urge said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation and at least temporarily into said piercing orientation upon release of said elongate finger out of said engagement with said cooperative structure on said engagement hub.

12. A lancet device as recited in claim 1 further including a cocking assembly structured to extend into said primary housing and move said lancet receiving assembly into said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 12 wherein said cocking assembly extends through a base of said primary housing and includes at least one cocking element cooperatively engaged with said finger of said retention member so as to urge said lancet receiving assembly which includes said finger into said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 13 wherein said cocking element includes an inwardly depending abutment structured to engage an outwardly extending abutment disposed on said elongate finger upon said cocking assembly being at least partially withdrawn from said primary housing, so as to pull said outwardly extending abutment, and accordingly said lancet receiving assembly, towards said base of said primary housing and into said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 14 wherein an exterior head of said cocking assembly is normally disposed in generally adjacent relation with said base of said primary housing unless pulled from said housing in order to withdraw said cocking assembly from said primary housing and urge said lancet receiving assembly into said cocked orientation, said inwardly depending abutment of said cocking element being normally disposed in substantially spaced apart relation from said outwardly extending abutment when said cocking assembly is in said normal, generally adjacent relation to said base of said primary housing so as to avoid restricting movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation into said piercing orientation upon release of said retention member from said engaged relation with said engagement hub.

A lancet device as recited in claim 15 wherein said exterior head of said cocking assembly is disposed in generally surrounding relation to an exterior actuation head of said actuation assembly, said actuation assembly being structured and disposed to protrude said actuation head from said exterior head of said cocking assembly upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation, and to generally conceal said actuation head at least even with a plane of said exterior head of said cocking assembly when said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said fired orientation, so as to provide a tactile indication that said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 16 wherein said retention member urges said actuation assembly towards said base of said primary housing, such that said actuation head of said actuation assembly protrudes from said exterior head of said cocking assembly, upon said retention member being moved into said cooperative engagement with said engagement hub.

18. A lancet device as recited in claim 1 wherein said primary housing includes a generally triangular configuration so as to facilitate gripping thereof and so as to prevent rolling thereof when disposed on a flat surface.

19. A lancet device comprising:

a lancet, said lancet including a piercing tip,

a primary housing,

a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed at least partially within said primary housing and structured and disposed to at least temporarily hold said lancet,

said lancet receiving assembly being moveable between a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, with movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

a removable extension segment structured to selectively extend a length of the lancet device so as to increase a manipulability thereof, said extension segment structured to be operatively coupled with said lancet receiving assembly and being movable therewith between said cocked orientation and said fired orientation,

said extension segment structured to at least temporarily hold said lancet upon being operatively coupled with said lancet receiving assembly,

said lancet receiving assembly structured to be retained in said cocked orientation,

an actuation assembly structured and disposed to release said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation so as to result in driven movement of said lancet.

20. A lancet device as recited in claim 19 wherein said extension segment includes a moveable element, said moveable element including a distal end and a proximal end, said distal end structured to be coupled with said lancet receiving assembly and said proximal end structured to at least temporarily hold said lancet.

21. A lancet device as recited in claim 21 wherein said extension element further comprises a biased return element operably engaged with said moveable element and structured to withdraw said piercing tip from said piercing orientation to said fired orientation.

22. A lancet device as recited in claim 21 wherein said extension segment further includes an extension housing structured to be coupled with said primary housing, said extension housing structured to movably contain said moveable element.

23. A lancet device as recited in claim 23 further comprising a cover assembly structured to be matingly coupled with said primary housing so as to define an interior chamber,

said cover including a piercing opening wherethrough said piercing tip of said lancet at least temporarily extends during movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation.

25. A lancet device as recited in claim 23 wherein said extension segment further includes a restriction assembly structured to maintain said moveable element movably coupled to said extension housing.

24. A lancet device as recited in claim 24 wherein said extension housing is further structured to receive said cover assembly operably coupled thereto.

26. To be used with a lancet device of the type including a lancet, a primary housing, and a lancet receiving assembly structured to at least temporarily hold the lancet and movable relative to the primary housing between a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, a lancet extension segment comprising:

a moveable element, said moveable element including a distal end and a proximal end,

said distal end of said moveable element structured to be coupled with said lancet receiving assembly,

said proximal end of said moveable element structured to at least temporarily hold said lancet;

said moveable element structured to move with the lancet receiving assembly between said cocked and said fired orientations resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

an extension housing structured to be removably coupled with the primary housing and to movably contain said moveable element so as to selectively extend a length of the lancet device and increase a manipulability thereof.

27. A lancet extension segment as recited in claim 26 further comprising a restriction assembly structured to maintain said moveable element movably coupled to said extension housing.

28. A lancet extension segment as recited in claim 27 wherein said restriction assembly comprises:

at least one restrictor segment protruding from said moveable element, and

at least one restrictor panel coupled to said extension housing and disposed so as to abut at least said restrictor segment so as to resist removal of said moveable element from said extension housing.

A lancet extension segment as recited in claim 28 wherein said restrictor panel is disposed in sandwiched relation between said restrictor segment and said proximal end of said moveable element, said restrictor panel being structured to resist passage thereof over said restrictor segment and said proximal end of said moveable element.

A lancet extension segment as recited in claim 28 further comprising a pair of spaced apart one of said restrictor panel coupled to said extension housing and disposed in spaced apart relation from one another on opposite sides of said restrictor segment so as to contain said restrictor segment therebetween and resist removal of said moveable element from said extension housing.

31. A lancet extension segment as recited in claim 26 wherein said extension element further comprises a biased return element operably engaged with said moveable element and structured to withdraw said piercing tip from said piercing orientation to said fired orientation.

32. A lancet device comprising:

a lancet, said lancet including a piercing tip,

a primary housing,

a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed within said primary housing and structured and disposed to at least temporarily hold said lancet,

said lancet receiving assembly including a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

an actuation assembly, said actuation assembly including an actuation head and structured and disposed to release said lancet receiving assembly said cocked orientation,

a cocking assembly structured to extend into said primary housing and to selectively move said lancet receiving assembly into said cocked orientation, and

said cocking assembly including an exterior head disposed in generally surrounding relation to said actuation head of said actuation assembly, said actuation assembly structured and disposed to permit actuating access to said actuation head upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation.

33. A lancet device as recited in claim 32 wherein said exterior head of said cocking assembly is normally disposed in generally adjacent relation with a base of said primary housing unless pulled into spaced apart relation from said primary housing in order to withdraw said cocking assembly from said primary housing and urge said lancet receiving assembly into said cocked orientation.

A lancet device as recited in claim 32 wherein said actuation assembly is structured and disposed to protrude said actuation head from said exterior head of said cocking assembly upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation, and to generally conceal said actuation head at least even with a plane of said exterior head of said cocking assembly when said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said fired orientation, thereby providing a tactile indication that said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said cocked orientation.

35. A lancet device comprising:

a lancet, said lancet including a piercing tip,

a primary housing,

a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed at least partially within said primary housing and structured and disposed to at least temporarily hold said lancet,

said lancet receiving assembly being moveable between a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, with movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

a retention member,

an engagement hub, said engagement hub structured to be cooperatively engaged with said retention member at least upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation so as to maintain said lancet receiving assembly in said cocked orientation until said retention member is affirmatively released from said cooperative engagement therewith,

an actuation assembly structured and disposed to release said retention member from said cooperative engagement with said engagement hub,

said retention member including at least one finger, said finger including a depending protrusion structured to engage cooperative structure on said engagement hub when said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said cocked orientation, and

said actuation assembly being structured to at least temporarily urge said finger out of said engagement with said cooperative structure on said engagement hub, and

said finger being coupled to said lancet receiving assembly and said engagement hub protrudes inwardly from a base of said primary housing and includes a generally enlarged head behind which said depending protrusion of said finger is cooperatively disposed in order to retain said lancet receiving assembly in said cocked orientation.

36. A lancet device comprising:

a lancet, said lancet including a piercing tip,

a primary housing,

a lancet receiving assembly movably disposed at least partially within said primary housing and structured and disposed to at least temporarily hold said lancet,

said lancet receiving assembly being moveable between a cocked orientation and a fired orientation, with movement of said lancet receiving assembly from said cocked orientation to said fired orientation resulting in driven movement of said lancet at least temporarily into a piercing orientation,

a retention member,

an engagement hub, said engagement hub structured to be cooperatively engaged with said retention member at least upon said lancet receiving assembly being disposed in said cocked orientation so as to maintain said lancet receiving assembly in said cocked orientation until said retention member is affirmatively released from said cooperative engagement therewith,

an actuation assembly structured and disposed to release said retention member from said cooperative engagement with said engagement hub,

said retention member including at least one finger, said finger including a depending protrusion structured to engage cooperative structure on said engagement hub when said lancet receiving assembly is disposed in said cocked orientation, and

said actuation assembly being structured to at least temporarily urge said finger out of said engagement with said cooperative structure on said engagement hub,

a cocking assembly structured to move said lancet receiving assembly into said cocked orientation, said cocking assembly including at least one cocking element, and

said cocking element including an inwardly depending abutment structured to engage an outwardly extending abutment disposed on said finger upon said cocking assembly being at least partially moved relative to said primary housing, so as to move said outwardly extending abutment, and accordingly said lancet receiving assembly, into said cocked orientation.
