Abstract

A navigation system includes a processor and bit-mapped earth surface map image data in a first data storage device accessed by the processor/, the processor displaying an image essentially filling a display area of a display screen and centered on any latitude and longitude supplied to the processor, the image having no discontinuities. The processor may receive latitude and longitude inputs from a user via a user input device, or from a global positioning system (GPS) receiver incorporated in the navigation system. The displayed map image may thus be centered at a desired longitude and latitude or at the longitude and latitude of the navigation system itself. The system may include a second data storage device for storing data from and providing data to the processor. Route information such as flight plan data may then be stored in the second data storage device. Information relating to the type of map system displayed and the scale at which it is displayed, to the currently displayed longitude and latitude, and other significant information is always displayed with the displayed map image. Other information is selectably displayed at a peripheral portion of the display area. Overlays may be selectably displayed over the bit-mapped map image display, with corresponding features appropriately aligned. Such overlays may include approach overlays instrument flight rules route charts, and current weather information.

Claims

1. A navigation system comprising:

a processor;

a first computer storage medium for storing first data for access by the processor, the first data including standardized bit-mapped map image data of at least one map system of at least a portion of the surface of the earth;

a user input device for providing a latitude and longitude to the processor;

a global positioning system (GPS) receiver for providing global positioning system data to the processor; and

a display screen having a display area for displaying map images and information,

wherein the processor is programmed to operate in two modes selectable by a user, a GPS track mode in which a latitude and longitude are supplied to the processor by the GPS receiver and a view maps mode in which a latitude and longitude are supplied to the processor by the user directly through the user input device to permit a user to preview a proposed route, the processor responding to the selected mode and supplied latitude and longitude by displaying on the display area of the display screen a bit-mapped map image related to the supplied longitude and latitude, the bit-mapped map image essentially filling the display area of the display screen with no discontinuities in the image over the entire map system except at the edges at the map system, the processor updating the bit-mapped map image whenever a new longitude and latitude is supplied to the processor.

2. The navigation system of claim 1 wherein the first data includes airport data including at least airport locations, names, and official identifiers.

The navigation system of claim 2 further comprising a second computer storage medium for storing second data from and providing second data to the processor, wherein the processor stores, as said second data in response to user inputs, information on a route including a starting point, a destination, and any waypoints.

The navigation system of claim 3 wherein any of said starting point, said destination point, and said any waypoints are supplied to the processor from the airport data in response to selection of an airport as said starting point, said destination point, or said waypoint by user inputs through the user input device.

5. The navigation system of claim 3 wherein the processor stores, as said second data in response to user inputs, information on multiple routes including for each route at least said starting point, said destination, and said any waypoints.

6. The navigation system of claim 5 wherein the processor selectively displays a current and a next waypoint of a selected route.

7. The navigation system of claim 5 wherein the processor automatically reverses a selected route in response to a user input through the user input device.

The navigation system of claim 5 wherein the routes constitute flight plans and wherein the processor uses input from the global positioning system receiver to track progress of the navigational system along a selected flight plan, and wherein the processor displays over a peripheral portion of the display area a flight plan information window containing information on a present leg and a next leg of the selected flight plan, the flight plan information window being selectively displayable according to user inputs through the user input device.

9. The navigation system of claim 2 wherein longitude and latitude are supplied to the processor from the first computer storage medium and correspond to the location of a selected airport selected by user inputs through the user input device.

The navigation system of claim 2 wherein the processor displays over a peripheral portion of the display area a navigation information window containing at least information, derived from the global positioning system receiver, on ground track, the navigation information window being selectively displayable according to user inputs through the user input device.

The navigation system of claim 2 wherein the processor displays over a peripheral portion of the display area a nearest airport window containing at least the name, location, distance, and heading of the airport nearest to the navigation system, the nearest airport window being selectively displayable according to user inputs through the user input device.

The navigation system of claim 2 wherein the processor displays over a peripheral portion of the display area a global positioning system receiver status window containing both information on the signal strengths of each global positioning system signal being tracked by the global positioning system receiver, and a tracking mode indicator indicating whether the global positioning system is in a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional tracking mode, the global positioning system receiver status window being selectively displayable according to user inputs through the user input device.

13. The navigation system of claim 2 wherein the airport data includes information on runways, communications, navigational facilities, and services and supplies available.

14. The navigation system of claim 1 wherein the first data includes standardized bit-mapped image data of at least two map systems of differing scale.

15. The navigation system of claim 14 wherein one of the at least two map systems comprises world aeronautical charts.

16. The navigation system of claim 14 wherein one of the two map systems comprises sectional aeronautical charts.

17. The navigation system of claim 14 wherein the first data includes standardized bit-mapped image data of at least three maps of mutually differing scales.

18. The navigation system of claim 1 including a weather information receiver comprising a port for receiving radar weather information from the radar of a vehicle in which the navigation system is used.

19. The navigation system of claim 1 including a weather information receiver for receiving data over a wireless communication link.

20. A navigation system comprising:

a processor;

a first computer-readable storage medium including bit-mapped map image data of at least one system of earth surface maps readable by the processor;

a user input device for providing user input to the processor; and

a display device connected to the processor for displaying images and information, the processor producing, from the bit-mapped map image data, and displaying on the display device, in response to any longitude and latitude supplied to the processor from the user input device, a bit-mapped map image essentially filling a display area of the display device and having no discontinuities except at the edges of the map system and centered at the supplied longitude and latitude, the processor further displaying in response to user inputs an overlay accurately overlaid on and scaled to the bit-mapped map image, the overlay selectably including weather information,

wherein the bit-mapped map image data includes bit-mapped map image data of at least two systems of maps having mutually differing scales, the bit-mapped map image produced by the processor being formed from the bit-mapped map image data of a selectable one of the at least two systems of maps having mutually differing scales, the bit-mapped map image essentially filling the display device and having no discontinuities except at the edges of the map system and centered at the supplied longitude and latitude, the processor displaying in response to user input an overlay accurately overlaid on and scaled to the bit-mapped map image, the accurate overlay and scale being maintained regardless of which of the at least two systems of maps is selected.

21. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the navigation system further comprises a global positioning system receiver for providing global positioning information to the processor, and wherein the computer-readable storage medium includes airport identification and location data, and wherein the input longitude and latitude is supplied to the processor from a selectable one of the user input device, the airport location data from the computer-readable storage medium, and the global positioning system receiver.

22. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the bit-mapped map image is selectively dimmed according to a user input from the user input device while a simultaneously displayed overlay, overlaid on and scaled to the bit mapped-map image, remains undimmed.

23. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the overlay selectably includes an airport approach plate.

24. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the overlay selectably includes an instrument flight rules route chart.

25. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the overlay comprises a radar weather information.

26. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the weather information comprises a radar weather image.

27. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the weather information comprises a satellite weather image.

28. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the weather information comprises a weather chart.

29. The navigation system of claim 20 wherein the overlay selectably includes components including an airport approach plate and an instrument flight rules route chart.

30. The navigation system of claim 29 wherein brightness on the display device of the selectably includable components of the overlay is individually adjustable.

31. A navigation system comprising:

a processor;

a computer-readable storage medium including bit-mapped map image data of at least one system of earth surface maps readable by the processor;

a user input device for providing a latitude and longitude to the processor;

a global positioning system receiver for providing global positioning data to the processor; and

a display device connected to the processor for displaying images and information,

wherein the processor is programmed to operate in two modes selectable by a user, a GPS track mode in which a latitude and longitude are supplied to the processor by the GPS receiver and a view maps mode in which a latitude and longitude are supplied to the processor by the user directly through the user input device to permit a user to preview a proposed route, the processor responding to the selected mode and supplied latitude and longitude by displaying on the display area of the display screen a bit-mapped map image related to the supplied latitude and longitude, the processor further displaying in response to user inputs an overlay accurately overlaid on and scaled to the bit-mapped map image, the overlay selectably including both information of a constantly varying nature and information of a relatively unvarying nature.

32. The navigation system of claim 31 wherein the information of a constantly varying nature includes weather information.

33. The navigation system of claim 31 wherein the information of a relatively unvarying nature includes approach information or instrument flight rules route information.

34. The navigation system of claim 31 wherein the information of a constantly varying nature includes weather information and the information of a relatively unvarying nature includes approach information or instrument flight rules route information.

35. The navigation system of claim 31 further comprising a receiver for receiving the information of a constantly varying nature.
