1. A method for sending a facsimile of a written message comprising:
- recording strokes that set forth the message with a writing instrument used to make the strokes, the writing instrument monitoring its own position; and
sending the strokes as part of the facsimile to a recipient designated by the strokes, the facsimile comprising of strokes made with the writing instrument as determined by the position of the writing instrument.

A method and apparatus for sending a facsimile of a message is disclosed. The present invention provides for recording pen strokes that set forth a message and sending the recorded pen strokes as part of a facsimile.

1. A method for sending a facsimile of a written message comprising:

recording strokes that set forth the message with a writing instrument used to make the strokes, the writing instrument monitoring its own position; and

6. A system for sending a facsimile of a message comprising:

a pen to monitor its own position, the pen having;
a plurality of position sensors to sense strokes made with the pen and to generate position data in response to the strokes, and a transmitter coupled to the plurality of position sensors to transmit the position data; and
a base unit having;
a receiver to receive position data transmitted by the transmitter, and a communications interface coupled to the receiver to send the facsimile of the message in response to position data received by the receiver, the message comprising strokes made with the pen, wherein the message is communicated to a recipient designated by strokes made with the pen. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)
a processor coupled to the receiver and to the communications interface to process the position data to generate the facsimile to be sent via the communications interface; and

13. An apparatus for sending a facsimile of a message, wherein the message is written with a pen that transmits stroke data, comprising:

means for sensing a plurality of strokes made by the pen by monitoring positioning of the pen;
means for transmitting position data in response to the plurality of strokes;

means for detecting pen position by monitoring a pitch, a yaw, and a roll of the pen; and
