Abstract

A method for enhancing gas or oil production by delivering a nitrogen rich gas produced from a non-cryogenic source into the well and/or reservoir where the gas and/or oil is located.

Claims

1. A method for enhancing gas or oil production in which a compressed inert gas is delivered to a target area selected from the group consisting of a well and a reservoir containing said gas or oil, the improvement consisting essentially of:

(a) removing at least a substantial portion of the oxygen contained within a feed stream of air at the site of said drilling to produce an inert rich gas and an oxygen enriched waste gas; and

(b) delivering the inert rich gas to at least one of the well or the reservoir.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the inert rich gas is a nitrogen rich gas.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein step (a) is directed to passing a feed stream of air through a membrane which preferentially separates nitrogen gas from the other gaseous components of air.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of removing at least a substantial portion of oxygen is directed to passing a feed stream of air through a pressure swing adsorption unit containing an absorbent when preferentially absorbs oxygen and other gases contained with the feed stream of air to form the nitrogen rich gas.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the nitrogen rich gas contains at least 85 volume percent of nitrogen.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein the nitrogen rich gas contains at least 95 volume percent of nitrogen.

7. The method of claim 2 further including raising the pressure of the nitrogen rich gas to at least 200 psig before delivering the nitrogen rich gas to the target area.

8. The method of claim 2 wherein the pressure of the nitrogen rich gas is raised to about 1,000 to 2,000 psig.

9. The method of claim 2 further including adding a drilling fluid to the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the drilling fluid to reduce the density of the drilling fluid.

10. The method of claim 9 including placing the drilling fluid within a vessel contained within a downhole region of the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the drilling fluid.

11. The method of claim 4 including inserting a vessel into the well, placing a cement-like material around the vessel to secure the same within the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the cement-like material to decrease the density thereof and improve flow properties of the cement-like material.

12. The method of claim 2 wherein the well has at least one wall, the wall having cracks or fissures therein, said method including providing a flow of a poppant in a stream of the nitrogen rich gas to embed the poppants with the cracks or fissures.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the poppants are selected from the group consisting of sand and glass beads.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the well has at least one wall, said method including treating the walls with a stream containing an acid and the nitrogen rich gas.

15. The method of claim 12 including generating a flow of the gas or oil from the reservoir to a downhole region of the well, directing the gas or oil upwardly from the downhole region through a vessel, injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the vessel to assist the gas or oil to rise up the vessel and out of the well.

16. The method of claim 15 including injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the downhole region from outside of the vessel and passing the nitrogen rich gas into the vessel through a valve assembly.

17. A method for enhancing gas or oil production in which a compressed inert gas is delivered to a target area selected from the groups consisting of a well and a reservoir containing said gas or oil, the improvement comprising:

(a) removing at least a substantial portion of the oxygen contained within a feed stream of air at the site of said drilling to produce an inert rich gas and an oxygen enriched waste gas; and

(b) delivering the inert rich gas to at least one of the well or the reservoir in the substantial absence of an oxygen-containing gas other than any ambient air which may be present in the well or reservoir.

18. The method of claim 17 comprising delivering the inert rich gas to at least one of the well or the reservoir in the substantial absence of air other than any ambient air which may be present in the well or reservoir.

19. The method of claim 17 comprising delivering the inert rich gas to at least one of the well or reservoir through at least one conduit having no inlet for separately receiving an oxygen-containing gas.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the inert rich gas is a nitrogen rich gas.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein step (a) comprises passing a feed stream of air through a membrane which preferentially separates nitrogen gas from the other gaseous components of air.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the step of removing at least a substantial portion of oxygen comprises passing a feed stream of air through a pressure swing adsorption unit containing an absorbent which preferentially adsorbs oxygen and other gases contained within the feed stream of air to form the nitrogen rich gas.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein the nitrogen rich gas contains at least 85 volume present of nitrogen.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein the nitrogen rich gas contains at least 95 volume percent of nitrogen.

25. The method of claim 20 further comprising raising the pressure of the nitrogen rich gas to at least 200 psig before delivering the nitrogen rich gas to the target area.

26. The method of claim 20 wherein the pressure of the nitrogen rich gas is raised to about 1,000 to 2,000 psig.

27. The method of claim 20 further comprising adding a drilling fluid to the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the drilling fluid to reduce the density of the drilling fluid.

28. The method of claim 27 comprising placing the drilling fluid within a vessel contained within a downhole region of the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the drilling fluid.

29. The method of claim 20 comprising inserting a vessel into the well, placing a cement-like material around the vessel to secure the same within the well and injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the cement-like material to decrease the density thereof and improve flow properties of the cement-like material.

30. The method of claim 20 wherein the well has at least one wall, the wall having cracks or fissures therein, said method comprising providing a flow of a poppant in a stream of the nitrogen rich gas to embed the poppants with the cracks or fissures.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein the poppants are selected from the group consisting of sand and glass beads.

32. The method of claim 20 wherein the well has at least one wall, said method comprising treating the walls with a stream containing an acid and the nitrogen rich gas.

33. The method of claim 20 comprising generating a flow of the gas or oil from the reservoir to a downhole region of the well, directing the gas or oil upwardly from the downhole region through a vessel, injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the vessel to assist the gas or oil to rise up the vessel and out of the well.

34. The method of claim 33 comprising injecting the nitrogen rich gas into the downhole region from outside of the vessel and passing the nitrogen rich gas into the vessel through a valve assembly.
