Abstract

The present invention provides a method of forming a multi-layered core, particularly a multi-layered core for a golf ball, that provides improved centering of the golf ball center within the core, while allowing existing formulations to be used. The method includes heating the core material, molding it to form hemispherical shells, cooling the hemispherical shells, and assembling two hemispherical shells around a golf ball center to form a multi-layered core. The increased rigidity of the shells resulting from cooling them allows the use of existing core formulations while improving the centering of the golf ball center.

Claims

1. A method of forming a multi-layered core with improved centering of a spherical core, which comprises:

providing an uncured polymeric component having a cure initiation temperature;

making the uncured polymeric component pliable by heating to a first temperature below the cure initiation temperature;

shaping the uncured polymeric component to form a plurality of uncured shells, each uncured shell having a hemispherical shape;

cooling each uncured shell to a second temperature such that the uncured shell is sufficiently rigid to maintain the hemispherical shape and resist deformation upon assembly with the spherical core;

assembling two cooled, uncured shells around the spherical core; and

joining the assembled cooled, uncured shells and the spherical core to form a multi-layered core by heating the shells to a temperature greater than the cure initation temperature.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the polymeric component comprises at least one of polybutadiene, natural rubber, isoprene, or styrene butadiene.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first temperature is about 180°

F. to about 220°

F.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the joining step comprises compression molding assembled cooled, uncured shells and the spherical core at a curing temperature greater than the cure initiation temperature to cure the shells.

5. The method of claim 1, which further comprises forming a cover about the multi-layered core.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first shell has a viscosity of at least about 500,000 poise at the second temperature.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first shell has a stiffness of at least about 2.6×

10⁶ dyne/cm² at the second temperature.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the second temperature is about −

F. to about 45°

F.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the second temperature is about 0°

F. to about 45°

F.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the spherical core comprises a fluid-filled or solid ball center.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the fluid is a liquid.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the spherical core further comprises a spherical center and at least one layer disposed about the center.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the polymeric component further comprises at least one of a crosslinking agent or a free radical initiator.

13. A method of forming a multi-layered core with improved centering of a spherical core, which comprises:

providing an uncured polymeric component having a cure initiation temperature;

making the uncured polymeric component pliable by heating to a first temperature below the cure initiation temperature;

shaping the uncured polymeric component to form a plurality of uncured shells, each uncured shell having a hemispherical shape;

cooling each uncured shell to a second temperature such that the uncured shell is sufficiently rigid to maintain the hemispherical shape and resist deformation upon assembly with the spherical core;

compression molding the assembled two cooled, uncured shells and the spherical core at a curing temperature greater than the cure initiation temperature to cure the cooled, uncured shells, thereby forming a multi-layered core.

14. The method of claim 13, which further comprises forming a cover about the multi-layered core.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the first temperature is about 180°

F. to about 220°

F.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the first temperature is about 190°

F. to about 210°

F.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the first shell has a viscosity of at least about 500,000 poise at the second temperature.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the first shell has a stiffness of at least about 2.6×

10⁶ dyne/cm² at the second temperature.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the second temperature is about −
