Abstract
In an electric generating arrangement for a motor vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell is provided to generate electric energy for operating electric consuming devices. For supplying the fuel cell with fuel, hydrogen gas is cracked from the liquid fuel for the internal combustion engine, and the remaining fuel constituents are either burnt directly in the internal combustion engine, or returned as a liquid condensate into the fuel tank.

8. Electric generating arrangement for a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine and a fuel tank which supplies fuel to the engine, said electric generating arrangement comprising:
-
a fuel cell coupled to supply electric current to electrical components of said vehicle;
reaction means for chemically decomposing said fuel into hydrogen and residual fuel constituents;
a hydrogen separating device coupled to receive said hydrogen and said residual fuel constituents from said reaction means, said hydrogen separating device being coupled to provide hydrogen to said fuel cell both by way of a direct connection, and indirectly by way of a first intermediate hydrogen storage vessel; and
a disposal line coupled to supply residual fuel constituents from said reaction means to at least one of said fuel tank and said internal combustion engine. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11)
a first output line coupled to supply a liquid portion of said residual fuel constituents from said second intermediate storage vessel to said fuel tank; and
a second output line coupled to supply a gaseous portion of said residual fuel constituents from said second intermediate storage vessel to said internal combustion engine.
