An active rectifier comprising, an anode terminal, a cathode terminal, a MOSFET operable to allow current flow from the anode to the cathode, a voltage sensing circuit operable to sense the voltage between the anode and cathode terminals and a gate drive circuit responsive to the voltage sensing circuit and operable to drive the gate of the MOSFET such that the MOSFET conducts when the voltage at the cathode terminal is less than that at the anode terminal and such that the conduction occurs substantially in the unsaturated, linear operating region of the MOSFET.
