1. An apparatus for projecting an image on a retina, said apparatus comprising:

a connection means integral to said semiconductor package;
a two dimensional (m×
n) array of emitters electrically connected to said semiconductor package by said connection means, wherein said emitters are a monochromatic pump source;
an optics element attached to said two dimensional array of emitters, wherein the optics element includes a two dimensional (m×
n) array of individual optical elements matched to the two dimensional array of emitters; and
a phosphor element mounted on the apparatus between the two dimensional array of emitters and the optics element.

Abstract
A personal display device miniaturized to allow the projection of images directly on the viewer'"'"'s retina which is a compact and versatile device that further minimizes the potential for total immersion. The display device can be selected for use in the monitor mode or full video and full color or monochrome operation. The invention utilizes miniaturized 2D laser arrays integrated with nonlinear optical processes combining semiconductor technology with optics technology.

1. An apparatus for projecting an image on a retina, said apparatus comprising:

a semiconductor package;
a connection means integral to said semiconductor package;
a two dimensional (m×
n) array of emitters electrically connected to said semiconductor package by said connection means, wherein said emitters are a monochromatic pump source;
an optics element attached to said two dimensional array of emitters, wherein the optics element includes a two dimensional (m×
n) array of individual optical elements matched to the two dimensional array of emitters; and

15. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a means for mounting the apparatus on a human head and orienting said apparatus to project an image on a retina.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a means for selecting monitor, full video, full color, or monochromatic viewing modes.

17. A method for projecting an image on a retina comprising the steps of:

(a) activating semiconductor drive electronics which power emitters to produce energy;
(b) directing the produced energy at a phosphor element which converts this energy to visible light through the up-conversion process; and
(c) focusing said visible light on a retina, wherein the emitters of step (a) are a two-dimensional array of emitters and the phosphor element of step (b) is a two-dimensional array of phosphor elements matched to the two-dimensional array of emitters and mounted between the two-dimensional array of emitters and an optical element. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19)

20. A miniature personal display comprising:

a carrier device for mounting said display on a viewer'"'"'s head;
at least one integrated semiconductor package, said package comprising drive electronics and a beam source attached to said carrier device;
at least one integrated optics and phosphor element attached to said carrier device, wherein said package pumps energy onto said phosphor thereby producing visible light through the up-conversion process, which light is focused on the viewers eye by said optics, and wherein said beam source and said optics are matched two dimensional arrays of elements. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22)

23. A miniature personal display apparatus for projecting an image onto an eye of a user, comprising:

a control component;
a two dimensional array of emitters electrically connected to the control component;
an optics element attached to said two dimensional array of emitters, wherein the optics element contains a set of optical elements, wherein each individual optical element in the set is associated with an emitter in the two dimensional array of emitters; and
a phosphor element mounted between the two dimensional array of emitters and the optics element. - View Dependent Claims (24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34)
a first element that magnifies light passing through the first element;
a second element that further magnifies light passing through the second element; and
a third element that provides final collimation for input to the eye of the user.

31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the first element is an immersion type optical element, the second element is a Fresnel or holographic type dispersive optical element, and the third element is a Fresnel or holographic type optical element.

32. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the first, second and third elements are thin or thick film elements.

33. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the phosphor element is mounted to a side of the first element closest to the array of emitters.

34. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the control component controls the two-dimensional array of emitters to emit radiation onto the phosphor element such that the phosphor element emits visible light through the optics element directly onto the eye of the user without scanning.

35. A miniature display for projecting an image onto an eye of a user, comprising:

drive electronics;
an array of light emitting elements; and
an array of connectors for connecting the drive electronics to each light emitting element in the array of light emitting elements, wherein the connectors are atomically sharp metallic points and wherein the connectors touch the drive electronics and the array of light emitting elements.

36. A miniature display for projecting an image onto an eye of a user, comprising:

drive electronics;
an array of light emitting elements; and
an array of connectors for connecting the drive electronics to each light emitting element in the array of light emitting elements, wherein the connectors are atomically sharp metallic points and wherein the connectors connect the drive electronics to each of the light emitting elements in the array of light emitting elements on a one-to-one basis.

37. A miniature display apparatus for projecting an image directly onto an eye of a user, comprising:

drive electronics;
a two-dimensional array of emitters electrically connected to the drive electronics;
an optics element attached to the two-dimensional array of emitters; and
a phosphor element mounted on the miniature display apparatus between the two-dimensional array of emitters and the optics element, wherein the drive electronics drive the two-dimensional array of emitters to emit radiation onto the phosphor element such that the phosphor element emits visible light through the optics element directly onto the eye of the user without scanning.
